Food delivery for Kohli, and what’s Arshdeep reading? – United moods of India nets

Shamik Chakrabarty in Dubai
For the Indian team, things unravelled quickly and spectacularly in Australia. As it usually happens, when a side is in ferment, dirty linen was washed in public. Some startling reports emerged – a cricketer taking his personal chef on the tour, while another player’s entourage had a nanny for his kids.
The disaster Down Under forced the BCCI to come up with a 10-point diktat for the players and coaching staff to promote discipline and unity. Before the team left for Dubai for the Champions Trophy, it was ensured that the SOPs were strictly adhered to.
Accordingly, players are not accompanied by their families here. Even if some of them eventually turn up, they cannot stay in the team hotel. The players also came together, not in batches. As India had their first practice session at the ICC Academy ground on Sunday, capturing the mood was important. Safe to say that the BCCI guidelines haven’t turned the players into whinge bags, as yet.
Kohli gets his preferred food
Unarguably the biggest star in this Indian team, and world cricket for that matter, Virat Kohli wore his stardom lightly when he turned up for Delhi in a Ranji Trophy game against Railways. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) was making special food arrangements for him when Kohli told them not to bother. He was happy to have Kadhi Chawal with his teammates. On Day 1 in Dubai, the former India captain turned to a local food delivery outlet for his post-training morsels. The box was duly delivered and Kohli left the nets happy.

Pant sees the funny side of pain
A fierce Hardik Pandya hit landed on Rishabh Pant’s left knee, making the wicketkeeper-batsman grimace in pain. Pandya looked concerned, as Pant limped off the field. The support staff were active, an icepack was applied and Pant’s knee was heavily strapped. Treatment done, he saw the funny side of the whole thing. The stumper, who is the team’s second-choice behind KL Rahul in the 50-over format, broke into a smile as went out to bat.
Shami’s smart seats
It felt like Mohammed Shami was bowling well within himself. A ripper beat Rahul all ends up, but there were occasions when the radar didn’t quite work. All said and done, the veteran fast bowler had a lengthy bowling spell at the nets. After his first stint that lasted about half an hour, Shami converted an icebox into his smart seat, munched a banana and sipped water from a bottle. The breather earned, he was ready to go again.
Books for company for Arshdeep
Looks like Arshdeep Singh has come here heavily armed with books. The majority of modern-day cricketers aren’t known for their reading habits – Ravichandran Ashwin was a glorious exception, and before him, Rahul Dravid and Saba Karim – but the young left-arm seamer proved otherwise. He bowled with top intensity at the nets, and once he was done, he sat and started reading a book.
Rain in the desert
As India’s nets session drew to a close, a few drops of rain began to fall. Scattered clouds had rolled in, making the mid-February weather even more pleasant. Rain in the desert is a rarity. Sunday was refreshingly different. Make no mistake, fast bowlers will get help from the conditions here.
