It was the 15th match of WPL 2024. UP Warriorz (UPW) needed a win against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, to stay alive in the playoff race. Ultimately, they won by just one run, but the match was full of drama and tension. In their four WPL meetings, this was the first time UPW managed a victory, thanks to their current skipper, Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance.

Deepti was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance, scoring 59 off 48 balls and taking four wickets for 19 runs, including a hat-trick. However, how DC collapsed in the last two overs, allowing UPW to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, is now etched in the history books of this competition.

Batting first, UPW managed only 138/8 in 20 overs, with Deepti top-scoring with 59. In reply, DC looked comfortable in their chase. After 13 overs, they needed just 48 runs off 42 balls, with skipper Meg Lanning batting on 59* and eight wickets in hand. But then, Deepti provided the much-needed breakthrough, dismissing Lanning for 60 on the last ball of the 14th over.

With DC needing 15 runs off 12 balls and six wickets in hand, Deepti was given the responsibility of bowling the 19th over. She delivered immediately, dismissing Annabel Sutherland and Arundhati Reddy on consecutive deliveries, completing the first-ever hat-trick by an Indian in WPL history. She also removed Shikha Pandey in the same over, finishing with a brilliant four-wicket haul.

Despite losing quick wickets, DC still had a strong chance. They needed 10 runs in the last over, with Radha Yadav on strike against Grace Harris. Radha smashed a six on the first ball and took a double on the next, reducing the equation to just two runs off four balls with three wickets in hand. DC fans were confident, but what followed was pure chaos.

First, Harris dismissed Radha. Then, a mix-up led to Jess Jonassen’s run-out. On the very next ball, Harris took another wicket, removing Titas Sadhu. From being in control, DC was suddenly all out with one ball remaining, falling short by just one run.

UPW’s new era under skipper Deepti Sharma had started with a six-wicket loss to Gujarat Giants (GG) in its WPL 2025 opener at the Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. Now, they will look to secure their first win of the season against DC at the same venue. Deepti did well with the bat in the first game (39 off 27) but went wicketless with the ball (0/32 in four overs) against GG.

UPW’s success often depends on Deepti’s all-round performance. In the 11 WPL matches they have lost, Deepti went wicketless in six of them, picking up just seven wickets at an economy of 8.17. Another strong showing from her, both as a player and leader, will be crucial against DC.

For DC, their campaign began with a narrow win over Mumbai Indians (MI), followed by a loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Their middle order has struggled in both games, with spinners accounting for ten of their 18 wickets. This could be an area that UPW’s spin trio—Sophie Ecclestone, Alana King, and Deepti Sharma—could target to disrupt DC’s campaign further.
