India’s tour of England, featuring five high-stake Test matches is right around the corner and so is the much anticipated squad announcement. As reported by RevSportz earlier, the main Test squad for England is likely to be announced on the 20th of May. Just days before, reports started swirling that Virat Kohli had expressed his intent to make himself unavailable for selection for the Test series.

In light of Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game on the 7th of May, the reports of Kohli wanting to withdraw from the series caused unrest among fans. With Shubman Gill as the frontrunner for the captaincy position, and Bumrah unlikely to play all games in the Test series, Rohit and Virat’s absence in the team would leave a gaping hole in the fairly inexperienced squad.

Former Australia captain, Michael Clarke commented on the rumours of Virat Kohli’s retirement

“I hope the rumours aren’t true. I believe Virat still has a lot of Test runs in him and any team with him in it is a better team.”

The Indian test team stands on the brink of a transition and the coming days will be crucial. Whether Kohli plays or not, the England tour will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket.
