IND vs SA: “You cannot win the game in the powerplay but you can lose it” – Suryakumar after humiliating loss
Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav remained calm and aimed for improvement after South Africa defeated India by 76 runs in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on February 22 in Ahmedabad. The defeat broke India’s unbeaten streak in the tournament as they began the Super Eight stage with a loss.
During the post-match presentation, Suryakumar addressed the result and said, “We were always in the game when we started. Bowled really well in the beginning. From 7-15, they batted really well and then we come back. Bowled really wellbut could have batted better. Sometimes, you have to think you cannot win the game in the powerplay but you can lose it. Did not have the partnerships we needed. Part of the game. We will learn from it. Sit back and bounce back.”
Praising Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, he added, “Everyone knows their combination has been lethal. Both bowled eight overs, picked five wickets and gave up 45-50 runs. They bowl well in partnerships. And good to have them in our side.”
Looking ahead to the Zimbabwe match in Chennai, Suryakumar said, “Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well. Keep it simple. That is what we will try to do.”
Batting first, South Africa posted a strong total of 187/7 with the help of David Miller (63), Dewald Brevis (43) and Tristan Stubbs (44). For India, Bumrah picked three wickets and Arshdeep took two. Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube also managed one wicket each.
While chasing, India struggled throughout their innings. Shivam Dube fought with 42 runs, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals and eventually the whole team was bowled out for 111 runs in 18.5 overs. For South Africa, Marco Jansen was the standout performer with a four-wicket haul, while Keshav Maharaj also picked three crucial wickets.
India will now face Zimbabwe on February 26 in Chennai.
