India Back in Control as T20 World Cup Race Reignites

Finally, India got the combination right and it showed. Sikandar Raza couldn’t use himself against Sanju Samson and India, much like before the World Cup, were off to a flier. Samson did the job and when Ishan Kishan joined Abhishek Sharma, the early jitters had been dealt with. What followed was absolute carnage. Each batter played to perfection and India asserted themselves over Zimbabwe by the halfway stage. Tilak Varma too found his mojo and the finish was picture-perfect. This is the India that fans wanted to see and they finally got what they had asked for.

That things were going well was evident when the cameras caught Gautam Gambhir laughing. Laughing, not smiling – and clearly, the pressure was finally off. India now have their fate in their own hands and the game against West Indies at the Eden Gardens is a straight shoot-out.

A word on South Africa is in order here. They played to perfection to offer India a lifeline and are clearly looking the team to beat. In doing so, they have exposed a number of West Indies’ vulnerabilities, and that reality won’t be lost on India.

Since last night, social media is yet again buzzing. The players are all of a sudden not that bad! “India can still win” is the mood, and the very same people who were calling for every player’s head are now saying things radically opposite. That’s how fickle fandom is, and now all will queue up at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

India, like I have been saying every day, aren’t a bad team. Ahmedabad was an aberration and I am backing the team to make the semi-finals on March 1. For the entire cricket ecosystem, there couldn’t have been a better Thursday, and finally, the ICC and the broadcaster will heave a sigh of relief. Only, I hope that the lessons have been learnt and the stupid advertisements aren’t repeated any time soon.
