NZ vs SA: Jansen’s Four and Markram’s Fury Flatten Kiwis
An Aiden Markram special and brilliant bowling from Marco Jansen helped South Africa hammer New Zealand and register an emphatic seven-wicket win at Narendra Modi Stadium. On a good batting surface, Jansen’s four-wicket haul restricted New Zealand to 175, a total that was chased down inside 18 overs, thanks to an unbeaten, 44-ball 86 from Markram.
It was Markram’s night in Ahmedabad. He began with two drives in the opening over. A lofted one over cover off Lockie Ferguson’s first ball was a sign of the form he was in. Even though wickets kept falling at regular intervals, Markram never took his foot off the pedal. He reached fifty in 19 deliveries, breaking Quinton de Kock’s record for the fastest 50 in T20 World Cups for South Africa. De Kock had got there in 21 balls against England in Mumbai in 2016.
Markram inflicted punishment on New Zealand’s premier bowlers — Matt Henry, Ferguson and, in particular, Jacob Duffy. New Zealand tried to arrest the scoring rate. To some extent, Neesham and Mitchell Santner managed to do that, but thanks to Markram, the required run rate was down to a run-a-ball. At the halfway mark, South Africa were 119/2. The only thing New Zealand could manage was to delay the inevitable.
In the first innings, South Africa used Jansen differently. The left-arm pacer, who had an off day against Afghanistan at the same venue, was brought on as first change. There was no movement on offer. Tim Seifert greeted Jansen with a six. Next ball, he responded with a sharp bouncer to dismiss the opener. Rachin Ravindra fell to the tall pacer after a brisk start. In the same over, Finn Allen was outfoxed by a slower delivery from Jansen, giving him three wickets in his first spell.
Glenn Phillips’ wicket in the seventh over put New Zealand in a spot of bother. Although the Kiwis were losing wickets, that never stopped them from going hard at the bowlers. Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell came together to lay a platform with a 74-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The former was the aggressor, while Mitchell complemented him.
Markram’s 15-run over gave them momentum. Neither batter missed loose deliveries. While Chapman mostly dealt in boundaries, scoring 36 of his 48 runs that way, Mitchell relied largely on singles and twos.
Jansen returned to deny Chapman a fifty and break the partnership. South Africa fought back with two quick wickets. Neesham’s 23-run knock ensured New Zealand got past 170.
Brief scores: New Zealand 175/7 in 20 overs (Mark Chapman 48; Marco Jansen 4/40) lost to South Africa 178/3 (Aiden Markram 86 not out; Rachin Ravindra 1/9) by seven wickets.
