England Back Jos Buttler to Deliver as He Undergoes Special Preparation Ahead of Wankhede Semi-final
Jos Buttler looked quite relaxed during England’s training session at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday ahead of the crucial semi-final clash against India. Despite a string of poor scores in the T20 World Cup 2026 so far, Buttler appeared to enjoy the practice session with his team-mates. England will be banking on the experienced batter to deliver against India in the semi-final on Thursday. The former England captain has managed to score just 62 runs from seven matches in the tournament so far. Nothing has gone according to plan for the 35-year-old Buttler. However, the England team is not overly concerned about his form going into the crucial semi-final fixture.
“Jos is someone I’m pretty close to. He obviously wants more runs. But I certainly would rather have him in my team than coming up against him on Thursday night. I think he’s such a quality player. He’s done so well for us over many, many years,” England all-rounder Sam Curran said to the media on Tuesday.
Curran added, “Jos has done well on this ground (Wankhede Stadium) many, many times as well. So hopefully Thursday night is his night. But if it’s not, there’s no question he’s one of the best in the world. There’s no doubt that he’ll come good and we’re not worried about him at all.”
On Tuesday, Buttler underwent a structured training session at the Wankhede that lasted nearly an hour. He began by receiving throwdowns from Carl Hopkinson and Jeetan Patel before facing the spin trio of Adil Rashid, Will Jacks and Liam Dawson in the nets. He was seen practising slog sweeps, aiming to hit straight down the ground while also targeting the cow-corner region. It also appeared that he slightly tweaked his stance in an attempt to get extra room to hit the ball against spinners.
England captain Harry Brook also backed Buttler to come good and reckoned he is just one knock away from rediscovering form.
“There’s been a lot said about Jos. I said the other day that he’s played 150 (154) games for England (in T20Is) and people probably need to take a little step back from that. He’s probably the best white-ball player to have ever played the game. He’s in a little bit of a rut now, but I think that’s an exciting thing for everybody in the world to know what he could produce in the next couple of games,” Brook had said after the game against New Zealand in Colombo.
The pitches in Sri Lanka were not conducive to Buttler’s stroke play, as he prefers the ball coming on to the bat. With the Wankhede wicket likely to favour the batters, England will be hoping the experienced batter comes good against a strong Indian bowling line-up led by Jasprit Bumrah.
