Gaikwad Reveals What Samson Really Wanted at CSK

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad recounted a conversation with Sanju Samson in England, during which he encouraged the latter to join CSK. Samson responded by saying he would be happy to join purely as a player and play under Gaikwad’s leadership.

Speaking on the CSK podcast, Gaikwad said he urged Samson to consider joining the five-time champions, especially given his roots in southern India.

“I remember we had a conversation around two or three years ago. I think we were in England. He was asking me what things are like at CSK, how it all works, and what the environment is like. I told him, ‘I feel, being a South Indian, you should explore this opportunity. You should be here’,” Gaikwad told Abhinav Mukund on the podcast.

Samson was keen to understand how CSK function as a team and also made it clear that he would not join with the intention of leading the side. Instead, he said he would be more than happy to play under Gaikwad.

“That’s what I had expressed to him, and he said he would definitely love to come if the opportunity arose. The first thing he asked me two or three years ago was about how things were for me there, and whether I would be the next captain. I told him, ‘I don’t know. I don’t really care about captaincy. I just like playing here. I like the atmosphere, I like the culture, and I’m really happy here as a player as well.’ And he immediately replied, ‘I don’t want to come into a situation where I’m coming there because I want to be captain. I want to play under you. It is your team, it is your franchise, and I’m happy to be there just as a player. But whenever I get an opportunity, I would definitely love to come’,” Gaikwad added.

Gaikwad has also revealed earlier that he is set to open the batting with Samson. CSK will play their first game of the season on March 30 in Guwahati against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
