IND vs NZ: “Feels extremely special” – Bumrah after T20 World Cup final heroics
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell as India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to claim their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. They won the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8, defeating the Kiwis convincingly.
During the post-match presentation, Bumrah reflected on the victory at his home venue and said, “Feels extremely special because l’ve played one final in my home venue but couldn’twin that one, but today I won. I knew wicket was a flat one so had to use all my experience. Before this tournament I was in that zone where I felt I was trying too hard because I was bowling well but felt I was trying too hard. This tournament I just tried to let the game come to me, and that worked really well. My individual assessment has always been my strength and getting MOTM at my home ground in a World Cup final, it doesn’t get better than that.”
Defending a massive total of 255/5, Bumrah dismantled the New Zealand batting order with a four-wicket haul. He conceded only 15 runs in his four overs at an economy rate of 3.75, earning the Player of the Match award. His spell helped India bowl out New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs. Even, with 14 wickets, he finished as the joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Explaining his approach with the ball, Bumrah highlighted the importance of experience. “Because of the experience, because I’ve played on belters over here, and I have seen the other teams too, I learned that trying to bowl too fast can make shot-making easier. So just played smart, and tried to think of what the batsmen were trying to do.”
Bumrah also praised the team’s bowling unit in a high-pressure final. “Whenever we discuss, they always come up with options. And when communication is needed we did that. We never panicked. Kept our heads above the water. Teams that do that win the tournament and I am very happy we did it.”
With this win, India became the only team to win the T20 World Cup title three times, having previously lifted the trophy in 2007, 2024.
