In a massive blow to the Chennai Super Kings, Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 due to a hamstring injury, the franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed on Thursday.

An important part of CSK’s plans for the upcoming season, Ellis has been playing regularly since the BBL last year. After the BBL, he played against Pakistan and then in the World Cup before returning home to play domestic matches. Ellis’ injury will leave CSK with many questions, especially in the death overs, as the five-time winners do not have enough options there.

“It is a big blow for us,” said CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan to Sportstar on Thursday during an event to announce Kauvery Hospitals as an official partner of the team. “Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements.”

Ellis was retained for INR 2 crore ahead of Matheesha Pathirana, who has been CSK’s trusted option in the death overs since his debut in 2022.

In Matt Henry, Zak Foulkes and Jamie Overton, CSK have options in the pace-bowling department. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side is looking for replacement options.

Most of the players, including World Cup winners Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube, have joined the squad. Henry, Foulkes, Dewald Brevis and Matthew Short will join by 22 March, while Akeal Hosein will join on the 25th.

CSK will start their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on 30 April in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, in another piece of news, Rajasthan Royals’ new recruit Sam Curran is also most likely to be out of the tournament.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will miss the services of Jack Edwards. The tall Australian all-rounder is also reportedly out of the tournament due to an unspecified injury.
