Debasis Sen, KolkaTeam India pacer Akash Deep is eyeing a comeback in the Duleep Trophy in September, it is learnt. The 29-year-old is currently at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, undergoing rehabilitation. The fast bowler from Bengal had to miss the ongoing IPL 2026 due to a recurring lower-back stress injury that will take at least 3-4 months to heal.

Akash returned to the Centre of Excellence on Thursday. He has begun rehab and will gradually start running and strength training. RevSportz understands that it will take time before he resumes bowling. Realistically, he is expected to return to action during the Duleep Trophy in September. This means that he will miss the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the tour of Sri Lanka. If everything goes to plan, he should be available for the series against New Zealand in the autumn. The Indian team is scheduled to tour New Zealand in October–November 2026 for a full series featuring five ODIs, three T20Is, and two Tests.

Despite carrying an injury, Akash played the Ranji Trophy semi-final for Bengal against Jammu & Kashmir, where he took three wickets in the second innings. However, a recurrence of the lower-back stress injury forced him to pull out of the IPL 2026. He was supposed to play for  Kolkata Knight Riders.

Akash has played 10 Tests for Team India so far, taking 28 wickets, including a career-best haul of 10/187 achieved against England at Edgbaston in July 2025. He took 6/99 in the second innings of the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and was named Man of the Match. As things stand, the ace speedster will need time to fully recover before returning to action.
