Amol Muzumdar’s Present-Focused Push Towards T20 World Cup Glory
Amol Muzumdar loves living in the present. While the World Cup win was huge, he has now moved on from it and has his sights set on the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the UK, starting on June 12. He knows expectations are going to be much higher and is conscious that he has a good enough team to mount a strong campaign. The WPL has helped, and the sport has enough momentum in the country for the head coach to be cautiously optimistic.
I had the opportunity to speak to Amol at length a while back (the interview will be aired on RevSportz at 12 noon today), and what I liked about him was his body language. While taking pride in what was achieved, he also understands that sport is all about the present. A poor T20 World Cup will set things back, and he is determined to ensure nothing goes wrong. As India begin their T20 World Cup home stretch against South Africa on April 17, Amol is bracing for an exciting three months ahead.
He knows that it is on him and his support staff to inspire the players – to instil the self-belief that they can beat Australia and South Africa in English conditions. India have indeed run Australia close in the past, and there is no reason why they cannot cross the line. But to do so, they need to believe they can. Playing South Africa in Manchester in the early English summer will not be easy, but that is when Amol goes back to last year’s England series.

“We toured England last year, if you remember, at exactly the same time,” said Amol. “And we won both the T20 and ODI series. So we know we can do it in English conditions.”
India versus Pakistan in the women’s game has often been hype without substance. Now, however, things could be slightly different. Fatima Sana has played well against South Africa and demonstrated her big-hitting prowess. Again, it will boil down to Harmanpreet Kaur and Amol to answer the key questions: how will they get the dressing room to start believing again? What will they tell the players ahead of the Pakistan game on June 14? What areas will they focus on? Most importantly, how will they shut out the outside noise?
For Amol, the World Cup win has changed everything. The quiet confidence is showing. But that is now in the past, and that is the beauty of sport. There is another World Cup coming, and it is the most important event of the calendar year. He needs to stay in control and deliver, for sport can be ruthless otherwise. In the 50-over World Cup, he needed to channel his inner Shah Rukh Khan after the England game in the changing room – delivering what we know was a fiery speech. While he chose not to reveal what he said, the truth is it did the job. He will want things to fall into place in England without such a speech, for that is when the gains of the World Cup win will truly come to the fore.
