Gill Outshines Green as GT Seal Last-Over Win Against KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) struggles continued as they remained winless, despite posting 180 after opting to bat first. Gujarat Titans (GT) chased it down in the final over, with Shubman Gill’s 86 (50 balls) leading the way to seal a five-wicket win.
KKR Falter Early
KKR’s troubles began with team selection, as Tim Seifert opened alongside Ajinkya Rahane – a move that misfired instantly. Rahane fell for a golden duck to Mohammed Siraj, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi followed soon after, leaving the innings in disarray.
Kagiso Rabada removed Seifert at a crucial juncture, and by the end of the powerplay, KKR were three down. Forced into recovery mode, they lost momentum early.
GT Bowlers Dominate
GT’s bowlers operated with precision, striking regularly to deny KKR any partnerships. Rabada led the charge with three key wickets, while Siraj and Ashok Sharma chipped in with two each.
Rashid Khan was carted around by Cameron Green, but with pressure building once the pacers returned, he managed to dismiss the Australian off the final ball. All five GT bowlers finished with wickets – a mark of their collective dominance.
Green’s Lone Resistance
Green’s 79 off 55 was a lone battle. He started cautiously, going his first 15 balls without a boundary as wickets fell around him.
Once set, he accelerated in the middle overs, finding boundaries with ease, before slowing again at the death due to lack of support. He was dismissed off the final ball, capping a hard-fought but isolated effort.
KKR Bowlers Fall Short
KKR’s bowling lacked consistency. Sunil Narine was economical and removed Sai Sudharsan, while Varun Chakaravarthy impressed with two wickets, including Jos Buttler.
But the rest failed to sustain pressure. Anukul Roy leaked runs, while Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi were inconsistent and punished, especially by Gill. Any control built was quickly undone, easing GT’s chase.
Gill in Complete Control
Gill’s 86 off 50 set the tone for the chase. He attacked early, ensuring GT’s strong start, and handled spin – particularly Narine and Varun – with authority.
A 29-ball fifty and a decisive over against Varun tilted the game firmly in GT’s favour. Composed and fluent, Gill kept GT ahead until his dismissal, courtesy a sharp catch by Green.
Late Twist, GT Hold Nerve
With six needed off the final over, Ramandeep Singh’s introduction raised eyebrows. He dismissed Glenn Phillips, briefly reviving KKR’s hopes.
But with Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan at the crease, GT held their nerve. A chase that seemed comfortable turned tense briefly, before the home side sealed the win.
