India Eye Strong Women’s T20 World Cup Push Amid Rising Expectations

It is exactly 50 days to go until the Women’s T20 World Cup in June in the UK. India may not have had the best of starts in their final preparations in South Africa, but nonetheless there is every reason to believe they can mount a strong campaign when the showpiece begins. Very bluntly, two out of India, Australia and South Africa will make the semi-finals. While Pakistan, Bangladesh and a qualifier are also in the group, chances are the semi-final spots will be decided between these three sides.

Why do I think India have a chance? Why would I say they can indeed beat South Africa and Australia and make the top four? Is it mere hope, or are there sound reasons behind the assessment?

First, India now know how to win on the big stage. They also understand that a World Cup is about winning four matches. In the 50-over World Cup at home, India lost three consecutive matches but then won the games that mattered and were crowned world champions. All India need to do is win the four key games – perhaps even three. The planning needs to be spot on, and the format is such that individual performances can win India a couple of these crucial matches. With a number of players in the team capable of standing up on their day, India will bank on individual brilliance in England.

Second, while South Africa are a much-improved side, Australia are an ageing team and can be beaten. That is where the equation changes. India will surely have a chance against the Aussies, and it is time to get over the line against them in this format. The smaller grounds in the UK should help, and the experience of playing in England at the same time last year should also come in handy. As Amol Muzumdar said to me in an interview: “We know the English conditions and know what to expect. We played there in 2025 and won both the T20 and the ODI series, so we will have the confidence to get the job done.”

With strong crowd support expected in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and London – the venues for India’s games – the Women in Blue should feel quietly confident of doing well 50 days from now.

What could go wrong for India is the weight of expectations. Ahead of the November World Cup, the pressure was different. “Why don’t they win?” and “The women’s game needs its 1983 moment” was the refrain. Now, it is different. The fact that India go into the tournament as world champions in the 50-over format will mean people expect them to deliver in the 20-over tournament as well. Failure would mean the November victory is labelled a one-off, and there could be a dip in momentum.

Amol, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and the rest will be well aware of this. They also know that in sport, you are only as good as your last game. November is now in the past, and the June World Cup is the present. The country will expect, and they need to deliver.
