LSG’s Quiet Masterstroke: The Return of Mohsin Khan

Sanjiv Goenka has been subject to a lot of trolling in recent times. If I were in his position, I’d actually use it. He is being talked about, and it will help his team on social media. These trolls don’t matter, so Dr Goenka can start to look at it as publicity. Be the leader in the troll universe and gain considerable traction.

But that’s not the point here. The point is that Dr Goenka and his team, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), have given Indian cricket Mohsin Khan back. He is the only bowler to have bowled two maiden overs this IPL, one of them against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Mohsin has been sensational and can certainly push Arshdeep Singh if he can stay fit and hold things together.

A lot of work is done behind the scenes. This was one such case. Mohsin was brilliant in 2022 and was later badly impacted by multiple injuries. He had to undergo surgery and went off the radar. In a ruthlessly competitive world, LSG could easily have let him go and washed their hands of him. They did not. They cared for Mohsin and protected him. They stood by him at a time when he needed them most. It is the kind of support that few receive, and that’s what helped Mohsin make a comeback.

I remember last year, at the end of the IPL, three LSG players had to undergo surgery. Mohsin, Avesh Khan and Mayank Yadav were all supported by the franchise and given time off before making their respective comebacks. So alongside the trolling and everything else that is going on, this is something people should take into account.
Frankly, I don’t care whether LSG end up at the bottom of the table. I don’t really care who wins or loses. What I do care about is whether Mohsin makes it to the national team. If he does, India stand to gain a top-quality left-arm seamer going forward. Mohsin bowls a heavy ball and can indeed be an asset in South African conditions in 2027 if he makes it.

I watched his spell against KKR, where he picked up five wickets. He was brilliant. With some assistance from the pitch, he bowled with rhythm and venom. And he has got his pace back as well. That’s where LSG deserve credit. They have not made a story out of this and have quietly gone about their job, making a tangible contribution to the sport in India. Ask Mohsin and his coach, and you will know the story.

It is during tough times that a player needs support. That’s when his mental health is most affected, and that’s when he needs to rely on people. LSG were there for him, and that needs to be acknowledged.
In sport, you will lose far more than you win. LSG may lose this year, and that looks increasingly likely. But there are some things that go beyond wins and losses. Acts like this one go a long way in making a difference – to the player and to the sport.
