MI collapse as RR continue perfect start in IPL 2026

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavansh against MI (PC- BCCI/IPL)

Rajasthan Royals (RR) posted a commanding total of 150/3 in just 11 overs, setting a difficult target for Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-shortened encounter in Guwahati on April 8, 2026. In response, MI struggled to keep up with the required rate and finished at 123/9 in their 11 overs, falling 27 runs short of the target.

Rain played a big role in this clash. The toss was delayed and finally took place at 9:55 pm IST. The start time was revised to 10:10 pm IST, and after a thorough inspection of the ground, the match was reduced to 11 overs per side, with the first 3.2 overs declared as the powerplay. In gloomy conditions, MI skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and did not hesitate to bowl first.

RR openers dominate as Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi unleash carnage

RR openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi put on a show for the fans in Guwahati. Jaiswal got going in style with a boundary past mid-wicket off the first ball of the match. He then took on Deepak Chahar, scoring 22 runs in the opening over. What followed was a dominant display from Sooryavanshi against Jasprit Bumrah, a contest that had been highly anticipated. Sooryavanshi welcomed Bumrah with a six over the leg side. At the end of the powerplay, RR were 59 without loss.

The opening partnership of 80 runs was eventually broken by Shardul Thakur, as Sooryavanshi departed after a fiery 39 off 14 balls. Jaiswal continued the charge, bringing up his fifty and remaining unbeaten on 77 off 32 balls. He was also named Player of the Match.

Hardik Pandya leads MI’s bowling effort

Hardik Pandya brought himself into the attack in the fourth over when both RR openers were in full flow. After Trent Boult conceded 22 runs in an over, Pandya responded with a tight over, giving away just four runs. He finished with figures of 2 overs for 17 runs. Allah Ghazanfar also made an impact, picking up the crucial wickets of Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag while conceding only 21 runs in his two overs. Meanwhile, MI’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah remained wicketless, with an economy rate of 10.66, alongside expensive spells from Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar.

RR’s pace unit strikes in the second innings

MI struggled with the bat as RR struck early. The home team conceded just 10 runs in the first over while Ryan Rickelton got dismissed by Jofra Archer. Nandre Burger provided another breakthrough in the second over, removing Suryakumar Yadav. The pace attack continued to impress, with Sandeep Sharma dismissing Rohit Sharma for just five runs.

Batting collapse costs MI the game

The collapse continued as MI crumbled under pressure. At 60/5 after six overs, the match had already slipped away. Ravi Bishnoi maintained his form, picking up two crucial wickets, although he was slightly expensive with an economy rate of 12.50. Tushar Deshpande supported well with disciplined bowling. However, Sherfane Rutherford played a quick cameo of 25 off 8 balls for MI, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

With this win, RR have now won all three of their matches so far. With six points and a net run rate (NRR) of +2.403, they move to the top of the table. MI, meanwhile, are placed seventh with two points from three games and an NRR of -0.715.
