Mukul Choudhary reprises Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kella to stun KKR
I don’t know how many of my readers have read Sonar Kella or watched it. For those who have, they will understand: Mukul, Dushtu Lok, vanish. It was one of the best matches of the IPL, and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fans were left stunned by the heroics of Mukul Choudhary at the end. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and KKR will need to do all they can to stem this downward plunge.
Just pause and think about the temperament this young man possesses. Seven down when Mohammed Shami got out, with 50-plus runs still to get. Avesh Khan, Digvesh Rathi and Prince Yadav can hardly bat, so it was all down to him and no one else. KKR had the game and had it well under control. Mukul, however, had worked the equation out in his head. He would play all the balls and connect with three out of six every over – and the ones he connected would land in the stands.
First, it was Kartik Tyagi. That helicopter shot was something extraordinary, and that’s when it seemed this was not yet done. Another one followed, and all of a sudden the equation was 30 off two overs. Still KKR’s game, but only just. That’s where I felt Ajinkya Rahane made a mistake. Someone who hadn’t bowled all tournament and had just bowled one over couldn’t be given the 19th. He could have gone with Vaibhav Arora and finished with Karthik.

Instead, Rahane went to Cameron Green, and Mukul just tore into the Aussie. The six and the four set up the last ball, and the ferocity with which the final six was struck said something to everyone watching. This man meant business, and he was determined to close out the job.
Avesh did not do anything silly in the last over and took a single off the very first ball to give Mukul the strike. And then it was the young man all over KKR. A fantastic six brought it down to 7 off 4, and he was in control. Even when Vaibhav bowled two dot balls, Mukul did not panic. The penultimate ball was wide outside off, and that’s when the wrists came into play. Extraordinary is the word – the ball sailed over the cover boundary for six. LSG couldn’t lose, and all they needed was a single. They managed it, and Mukul was trending. Yet another star was born last night, and this is what makes the IPL what it is – India’s prime-time talent hunt.
Going back to Sonar Kella – Mukul, Dushtu Lok (read KKR), vanish.
Mr Goenka, if you haven’t read Sonar Kella, it is time you did.
