Rassie van der Dussen brings down curtain on international career
South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen, at the age of 37, has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing the curtains down on a seven-and-a-half-year international career. His last appearance came against Australia in a T20I in August last year, where he was unbeaten on 38 off 26 balls.
Throughout his international career, van der Dussen played 70 ODIs, 57 T20Is and 18 Tests, having made his international debut in 2018. The right-handed batter became a mainstay of the team, scoring 2,657 runs in 71 matches at an average of 50.13, including six centuries and 17 fifties. In T20Is, he scored 1,406 runs at a strike rate of 128.76.
In Tests, he scored 905 runs, including six half-centuries, with a highest score of 98. He was also part of the World Cup squads in 2019, 2021 and 2023, as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy.
“It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket,” Van der Dussen said in a statement. “To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country has been the greatest honour of my life. This journey has been paved with years of sacrifice, but the privilege of representing South Africa was worth every moment.”
Cricket South Africa CEO Pholetsi Moseki added: “Rassie delivered in key moments for the team and earned the respect of his team-mates, opponents and fans alike. We thank him for his service to South African cricket and wish him every success in the next phase of his journey.”
Although he has retired from international cricket, van der Dussen will continue to play for his domestic side, the Lions, and will be available for franchise competitions around the world.
