SA-W vs IND-W, 3rd T20I: Laura Wolvaardt’s Blistering 115 Seals 3-0 Series Win for South Africa Women
A thumping nine-wicket win for South Africa Women in the third T20I in Johannesburg as they sealed the five-match series with two matches to spare. Despite India Women posting a competitive 192/4 and setting a 193-run target, the bowlers were taken apart by the South African openers, skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus. Wolvaardt’s 115 and Luus’ unbeaten 64 ensured a dominant win for the home side, leaving the visitors clueless.
India made three changes, bringing back Renuka Singh Thakur and Kashvee Gautam while dropping N. Shree Charani and Kranti Gaud. They also left out Anushka Sharma to include Bharti Fulmali, who, however, did not get a chance to bat. India’s 192/4 was a much-improved batting effort compared to the first two games. Shafali Verma registered back-to-back fifties, and her 68-run stand with Smriti Mandhana set the tone.
However, left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba struck twice in consecutive deliveries, dismissing Smriti for 37 off 25 and Jemimah Rodrigues for a golden duck. This time, though, India avoided a collapse as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the innings alongside Shafali. The duo added 73 runs, with Shafali eventually falling for 64, while Harmanpreet carried on till the end. She remained unbeaten on 66 off 38, striking at 173.68, while Richa Ghosh chipped in with an unbeaten 18 off 10 to take India close to the 200-run mark.
In reply, it was expected that the Indian bowlers could pose a challenge, but the Wolvaardt-Luus pair had other plans. They took the game away in the powerplay, smashing 72 runs without loss. Luus played the supporting role while Wolvaardt dominated, bringing up her fifty in just 23 balls, the fastest for South Africa Women in T20Is. She then raced to her century in the next 24 balls, marking her third T20I hundred.
Luus, on the other hand, gradually accelerated and registered back-to-back fifties. Their 183-run partnership finally ended when Shreyanka Patil dismissed Wolvaardt for 115 off 53, striking at 216.98. However, Luus remained unbeaten on 64 off 42 as South Africa chased down the target in 16.3 overs, registering their highest successful chase in T20Is. The 183-run stand also became their highest partnership for any wicket in the format.
Deservedly, Wolvaardt was named Player of the Match as the Proteas Women took an unassailable 3-0 lead in dominant fashion. The fourth T20I will be played at the same venue on April 25.
