Has Shubman Gill Done Enough to Force His Way Back into India’s T20 Plans?

I have watched the highlights of Shubman Gill’s century against Rajasthan Royals a few times and think it was one of the best innings of this IPL. It was all class and, under pressure, a leadership statement from India’s red-ball and ODI captain. Another 700-run season, and it is clear that Gill has started to push the door open for a possible return to the national T20 team.

While there is serious competition from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and now Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, all of whom have done enough to stake their claims, ignoring Gill’s credentials is not going to be easy. He is India’s best all-format batter and has clearly turned things around in T20 cricket as well.

Sport is always about performance, and that is what will decide Gill’s future in the format. At the moment, he seems to be batting at his best and has scored heavily this season. It does not seem as though he is in a hurry or trying to play too many shots at the start of an innings. These are areas he has clearly worked on, and the results are showing.

The opening slot is perhaps the most difficult one to break into at the moment. Sanju has shown how good he is on the world stage. Abhishek, despite blowing hot and cold, is surely a contender. Add Yashasvi Jaiswal to the mix and the issue becomes even more complicated. And when you include Sooryavanshi, you know the competition is at a very different level.

Should India not try him at the top of the order in Ireland? How long can you keep him out when he is scoring so heavily? And if he does make it, can Gill fit in?

The IPL final is an extremely important fixture for Gill. While, in the red-ball format, he is the future of Indian cricket and is also firmly ensconced in the leadership position in ODI cricket, the T20 format is different. Gill has not really done anything truly standout in the format, and there are players waiting in the wings and breathing down his neck. That is why it is essential for Gill not only to win this IPL but also to make a statement with the bat.

While the focus will be on ODI cricket for now, I am sure the head coach and selectors will have one eye on the LA28 Olympics. The 2028 calendar will also feature the T20 World Cup, so long-term planning will be critical in every sense. Each of the contenders will need to score heavily and consistently. Suffice it to say that while Samson and Abhishek are not feeling the heat just yet, they too need big runs on a regular basis. With so much talent around, that is the only thing that should determine team selection going forward.

For now, it is fair to say that Gill has done enough in this IPL to bring himself back into contention. Add his leadership qualities, and you know there is always that option for the selectors. Clearly, there are interesting times ahead for Indian T20 cricket.
