IPL 2026 – RR and their over-dependancy on a few

Brilliance in sport is something that allows an athlete to touch a territory that would force even his/her teammates to wonder – how could you play such a shot? Or how could you sprint so fast? Brilliance is something that forces spectators to basically switch off their worries and watch an athlete’s gift-wrapped skills.

While facing Gujarat Titans’ fast bowlers, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the wonderkid from Bihar, once again reached uncharted territory that left everyone gasping for breath. Perhaps Yashasvi Jaiswal, his batting partner, too would have been left in a state of daze.

In his first over, Kagiso Rabada tried a short ball, but it was fractionally off line, and it was pulled with utter disdain. Mohammed Siraj attempted a yorker, but with an open stance and fast hands, the left-hand batter essayed an eye-popping wristy drive down the ground. It was nothing but willowy wizardry on display.

That stance and Vaibhav’s unique bat-swing, where it goes up like a coconut tree swirling in the air, could also act as a cue to dislodge him. The plan could be to usher in a hard-length delivery, angled away from over the wicket. Siraj executed that strategy to near-perfection with a short ball that went across the left-hand batter. Eventually, the short third man fielder pouched an easy catch. Siraj letting out a roar after picking up the wicket told a story about how much the opposition value Vaibhav’s wicket.

Jaiswal himself is a batter with high pedigree. Unfortunately for Rajasthan Royals, on the given day, the left-hand batter looked rather out of sorts and could only eke out three runs. On the bowling front, another of their mainstays had a forgettable day. At his best, Jofra Archer seems like a Rolls-Royce of fast bowling. In the RR-GT game in Jaipur, he looked anything but a smooth-functioning fast bowler.

In his first over, Archer bowled a surfeit of extras. Curiously, that 11-ball over had only a single boundary but Archer ended up with 18 runs against his name. At the completion of the first innings, Archer couldn’t even complete his quota of overs. It was indeed a chastening experience for the fast bowler.

As it happened, with all their lynchpins not putting up game-changing  performances, RR suffered an ignominious defeat. Somewhere that acts as an essence to paint the larger picture. In GT’s last few matches, collective effort has been the keynote of their success. With RR, their wins have been stitched on the basis of individual brilliance of a few. Granted that Donovan Ferreira has made a difference with his performances in the middle order. But they seem to depend on a few marquee players. And that could be the focal point behind RR’s struggles during the second half of the 2026 IPL.
