Jemimah, Nandni and Yastika Star as India Beat England by 38 Runs to Take 1-0 Lead in T20I Series

India began their England tour with an emphatic win. They scored 188/7 in their 20 overs after being sent in to bat, while England fell well short of the total, managing just 150/8.
India started their innings on a poor note with stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana becoming the first Indian woman batter to be dismissed off the first ball of a T20I match. Her RCB teammate Lauren Bell got the better of her. Credit also has to be given to the field placement as England stand-in skipper Charlie Dean got it spot on, placing a short extra cover where Mandhana eventually got caught. In the same over, fellow opener Shafali Verma holed out to mid-on trying to play a lofted on-drive.
With captain Harmanpreet Kaur rested, Yastika Bhatia found a place in the playing XI and burst onto the scene with a flurry of boundaries against Issy Wong, giving Jemimah Rodrigues at the other end enough time to settle before playing her shots. Wong conceded 27 runs in the second over. From then on, Yastika did not look back during the powerplay. Dean changed bowlers but both batters took full advantage as India raced to 73/2 in six overs, their third-highest powerplay total in Women’s T20Is.
Though Yastika raced to 40* off 17 balls in the powerplay, after the field spread she lost momentum and managed only 14 runs off her next 23 deliveries. A horrible mix-up eventually cost her wicket with India preparing to launch in the final overs. It seemed almost timely that Richa Ghosh walked in with 6.2 overs left and a set Jemimah at the other end.
While Yastika was brutal early on, Jemimah, the Player of the Match, started with touch shots and scoops as is her wont, before playing some brilliant strokes square of the wicket as well as through the deep mid-wicket region. Jemimah eventually fell to Dean, who completed a sharp return catch, with India losing both their set batters in quick succession. She departed after a well-made 69 off 40 balls.
Richa was joined by Bharti Fulmali, but both finishers departed without troubling the scorers much. Richa fell to a brilliant running catch behind the wicket by Wong, before Wong bowled Bharti. Richa became England debutant Tilly Corteen-Coleman’s first T20I wicket.
The onus was then on Deepti Sharma and Arundhati Reddy to finish strongly and Deepti responded brilliantly. Chants of “Asli Sharma kaun hai, Deepti Sharma” echoed around the ground and Deepti’s late flourish only added to the cheer. India eventually finished on 188/7, aided by England conceding as many as 21 extras.

England started brightly in the chase with Sophia Dunkley hitting some crisp boundaries off Arundhati in the opening over. However, both England openers were quickly removed by Kranti Gaud and England ended the powerplay on 43/2.
Amy Jones, batting at No. 3, was the lone warrior for England. She played some delightful strokes and even smoked Deepti through the covers, but did not receive enough support from the other end. Jones eventually holed out to Shafali at deep mid-wicket to hand Nandini Sharma her first international wicket. In the same over, Nandini also dismissed Danielle Gibson.
Nandini used her slower ball to good effect in the Women’s Premier League, something that had caught the selectors’ attention, and she once again relied on it to claim the prized wicket of Amy Jones. Arundhati, after an expensive first over, came back brilliantly and finished with economical figures off 0/23 (4), while N Sree Charani also impressed with 1/25 from her four overs. Also, India gave away just three extras to England’s 21 in a disciplined bowling display.
After Jones’ dismissal, England’s innings completely lost momentum, with Nandini also removing Wong to finish her debut match with an impressive three-wicket haul. Sophie Ecclestone showed some spark towards the end but it proved far too little, too late.
One thing remained constant throughout the evening, the crowd cheering both teams until the final ball. A light show before the presentation ceremony only added to the atmosphere. India now head to Bristol with a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
