KKR’s IPL 2026 Campaign Ends in Heartbreak as DC Seal Comprehensive Win
Heartbreak for KKR
Just 3.4 overs into the first innings, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) knew they were out of the playoff race, as Rajasthan Royals had sealed a convincing 30-run win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Though the team’s shoulders did not drop, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar was visibly disappointed during an in-game interview.
“We didn’t play our best cricket in the initial matches. I am proud of the boys and how they came back in the second half. We knew it wasn’t in our hands, and we will continue to control the controllables,” Nayar told the host broadcaster.
Regardless of the outcome of the RR game, KKR’s bowlers put in a commendable effort to restrict Delhi Capitals to 203 on what looked like a beautiful batting track at Eden Gardens.
KL Rahul caps off a stellar season
KL Rahul was mighty impressive for Delhi Capitals throughout the season, finishing with 593 runs at a strike rate of 174.41. Not only was Rahul the face of DC’s batting, but he also improved his strike rate while playing several crucial knocks. On Sunday, he capped off his season with a magnificent 30-ball 60, laced with eye-catching strokes all around the park. Rahul was eventually dismissed by Anukul Roy, but the DC opener had already laid the foundation for a 200-plus total.
Laser show entertains fans
The Cricket Association of Bengal organised a laser show during the mid-innings break to showcase the glorious history of Eden Gardens. The two-and-a-half-minute show highlighted iconic moments at the venue, such as the historic 2001 Test match and Carlos Brathwaite’s four sixes to win the T20 World Cup for the West Indies, alongside tributes to legends like Sourav Ganguly, Jhulan Goswami and Jagmohan Dalmiya, among others.
With the stadium set for a modern renovation, it was fitting to give younger IPL fans a glimpse into Eden’s history. Following the break, the run chase began, featuring Ajinkya Rahane ending his topsy-turvy IPL 2026 campaign with a 39-ball 63.
Kuldeep Yadav ends season on a high
Kuldeep Yadav had endured a mediocre season for DC leading up to this match. The left-arm wrist-spinner had just seven wickets to show for it, with an economy rate of over 10. However, he played a huge role in helping Delhi Capitals fight back after Rahane guided KKR to 100 in the first 10 overs.
While it was Lungi Ngidi who broke through the KKR top order by dismissing Finn Allen (20) and Manish Pandey (25), it was Kuldeep’s double-wicket 14th over that effectively ended KKR’s hopes of finishing the season with a win. Kuldeep’s first breakthrough came in the 10th over when he got the better of Cameron Green (2). In the 14th, he first dismissed a well-set Rahane before removing Rinku Singh for a golden duck. The DC spinner could have had a hat-trick, but wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel dropped Tejasvi Dahiya, leaving the bowler disappointed.
Ultimately, it was a great day for former KKR players, with Kuldeep taking three wickets and Mitchell Starc finishing with two.
