LSG vs RCB, IPL 2026: From Marsh madness to Prince magic – LSG stay alive in the playoff race

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spoiled the party for defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Stadium on May 7. Rishabh Pant’s side registered a nine-run win to keep themselves alive in the playoff race, while RCB missed the chance to reclaim the top spot in the points table. In a rain-interrupted contest, LSG bowlers held their nerve after setting a 213-run target and sealed the deal in a last-over thriller.
Marsh’s century sets the tone
LSG posted 209/3 in the rain-curtailed 19-over clash, courtesy of a brilliant knock from star opener Mitchell Marsh. First, his 95-run opening stand with Arshin Kulkarni (17 off 24) laid the platform, and then a 70-run partnership with Nicholas Pooran for the second wicket kept the momentum going. Marsh reached his fifty in just 20 balls and eventually brought up his second IPL century in 49 deliveries. He was dismissed for 111 off 56, striking at 198.21.
Pant’s blistering finish
Several rain interruptions disrupted the rhythm of the game, but the LSG batters maintained a strong scoring rate. In the last six overs, they added 84 runs to push towards the 210-run mark. Pooran scored 38 off 23, but it was skipper Pant’s unbeaten 32 off just 10 balls that provided the finishing touch. He smashed Rasikh Salam for two boundaries and a six in the final three deliveries of the innings.
RCB fielders also endured a sloppy outing, dropping multiple chances, and LSG capitalised fully to post a competitive total, which eventually became a 213-run target because of the DLS rule.
Prince bamboozles King Kohli
On a pitch where most RCB bowlers struggled, apart from economical spells from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya, the LSG bowlers looked far sharper, especially in the powerplay. With the new ball, both Mohammed Shami and Prince Yadav generated excellent seam movement. Whether due to the rainy conditions or precise execution, they troubled the RCB top order badly and dismissed both Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli early, sending the Ekana crowd into celebration mode.
Prince’s delivery to Kohli was a beauty – a good-length ball that jagged back in slightly, beat the inside edge, and crashed into the stumps. Kohli looked completely beaten as he departed for a rare two-ball duck.
Patidar, David’s efforts go in vain
There was some uneven bounce in the second innings, but RCB skipper Rajat Patidar looked determined during his explosive 61 off 31 balls at a strike rate of 196.77. The way he struck the ball, it briefly seemed he could single-handedly swing the momentum. However, a smart move from Pant to bring in left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed paid off as he dismissed Patidar.
A 95-run partnership for the third wicket between Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal kept RCB alive, but once again, Prince delivered the breakthrough, dismissing Padikkal (34) and Jitesh Sharma (1) in quick succession.
Tim David also fought hard with a quick 40 off 17, briefly lifting RCB’s hopes. Romario Shepherd (23* off 15) and Krunal Pandya (28* off 16) took the game into the final over with 20 runs required, but Digvesh Rathi kept his calm and sealed the win for the home side.
