MS Dhoni’s IPL Future Hangs in the Balance as CSK Face Defining Night

Will he or won’t he? This has been the talking point for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans for a long time. With two games remaining, time is indeed running out for MS Dhoni and his fans. Will they see him step out, or will he miss the entire season and never turn up again? While it is impossible to answer this question when it comes to MSD, the truth is that a win tonight will most likely ensure that he will not play again in this IPL.

If CSK have a chance of making the play-offs, there is no way Dhoni would want to upset the team combination and make his way in. The last game could be a virtual knockout, and seeing him turn up suddenly feels like a far cry.

Each time I have spoken to members within the CSK management, I have been told that Dhoni is training very hard – spending long hours batting and also keeping wickets. And yet, we haven’t seen him travel to Lucknow, where CSK lost to LSG. The only two reasons behind this are either that he still isn’t fully fit or that he doesn’t want to disturb a winning combination. There can’t be any other reason, and that’s why I am saying what I am saying. If CSK win tonight, there is no way Dhoni would want to upset things and turn up on May 21.

In such a scenario, I am once again reminded of the way his India career came to an end in England during the 2019 World Cup. Dhoni was on the cusp of history before that dreaded run-out happened. He was short by an inch, and the end was painful – an imperfect finish for the perfect finisher. Now, will we see history repeat itself? Not playing a single game was surely not part of the script, and for all his fans, this is the worst possible outcome.

At the same time, in a team sport, that’s how it is and how it should be. No individual is bigger than the team, and MSD knows that better than anyone. He will never put himself forward, and that’s how he has always played his cricket. His fans will have to live through this phase and accept that life is not perfect. It never was and never will be.

If you are an MSD fan, watch tonight’s game with added interest. If CSK win, there may be no Dhoni in this IPL. If they lose, chances are he could turn up for his fans on the 21st and give them one final chance to celebrate him.
