RCB vs MI: “Would love to see him being considered for the T20I side” – Ashwin on Bhuvneshwar

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar deserves a return to India’s T20I side after his brilliant performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the ongoing IPL season.

Ashwin heaped praise on Bhuvneshwar after his match-winning spell against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Raipur on May 10. “Hashtag ‘BringBackBhuvi’ — I’d love to see him being considered for the T20I side,” Ashwin said on JioHotstar. “Tick with the new ball, able to complete the death overs nicely, and if you need a six under pressure, he’s hammering that as well in the toughest part of the ground. That was proper Test-match bowling after he realised there was something in the surface. He keeps testing you as an opening batter.”

The 36-year-old has been one of the most consistent bowlers in the tournament. Bhuvneshwar has climbed to the top of the Purple Cap leaderboard with 21 wickets from 11 matches at an impressive economy rate of 7.46. His consistent performances have once again sparked discussions around his return to the national T20I setup. Bhuvneshwar last played a T20I for India in November 2022 against New Zealand. He has taken 90 wickets from 86 T20I innings for India.

Ashwin also highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s smart bowling and added, “To dismiss Rohit Sharma with that peach, a slower ball that just swung, was quite incredible. And later on, he was selfless enough to execute the yorker when he could have gone for a fourth wicket. Extremely happy for him.”

While praising Krunal Pandya for his heroic 73-run knock, Ashwin added, “With Krunal Pandya — we know HR managers and project managers, but that was proper ‘pressure management’. If you need one, please dial K for Krunal Pandya.”

With this win, RCB jumped to the top of the points table with seven wins from 11 matches. They will next face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 13 in Raipur.⁩
