Virat Kohli and the 2027 World Cup – India, and not egos, should show the way

I have now heard the Virat Kohli interview multiple times, and I could relate to it more and more. In fact, I remembered a conversation with him a few years back where he had mentioned something similar to me. We were having a chat about his cricket philosophy, and he said he wanted to field for all 90 overs in a day of Test cricket with the same intensity. “If it’s the 88th over of the day and I have to run all the way to the boundary and save one run, I will do so with the same intensity as if it’s the first ball of the day,” he had told me. What stood out for me was his commitment to the sport and how articulate he was. His statement regarding fielding in the 50-over game during the interview reminded me of this.
Let’s be clear – Virat has put the question of his 2027 World Cup participation to rest with this interview. There can be no further talk about whether he wants to be there. And the truth is, he has the performances to justify it. While no one can guarantee performance – something he himself referred to – it is also true that he looks in stellar touch. He has scored plenty of runs, but more importantly, he has looked hungry and fit. He is enjoying his cricket and, by his own admission, is working harder than ever. I don’t think anything more can be asked of him, and this should settle the 2027 debate.

Looking ahead, Virat shouldn’t have an issue staying fit. He clearly has a plan and is going about his job in the most professional manner. To leave family behind and come and play for months is always a challenge, and he has decided to do so because he still wants it badly enough. That is the indication that Virat can serve India well for one more World Cup. And if you have seen him bat in the IPL, you know well enough that he still has the game – even more so for 50-over cricket.
Unlike the go-big approach from ball one, which defines modern T20 cricket, the 50-over format will test batters. There will be attacking fields for the first 10 overs, and the bowlers will try to exploit the South African conditions. India will need Virat, and Gautam Gambhir should use his experience in the dressing room. In case there is an early wicket or two, Virat has the skill to steady things, and in the 50-over format, that is still the way to go.
The interview is evidence of how badly he wants it. All we need to do is use him well and give him space. This constant speculation should now be put to rest, and a quiet word between him, the head coach, and the chairman of selectors can sort out any misunderstanding that exists. Eventually, it is all for India, and no individual is bigger than the team. There is no place for ego when it comes to national interest, and everyone needs to understand that and move on.
