Will SKY and Hardik join MI squad before RCB game?

The Mumbai Indians squad travelled to Raipur on Wednesday. Two big stars were conspicuous by their absence — Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. The former missed MI’s previous match against Lucknow Super Giants and Surya was the stand-in captain. At the post-match press conference, Ryan Rickelton was asked about Hardik’s injury and he said that the skipper had back spasms. The opener expressed his ignorance over Hardik’s possible return date.

As regards the all-rounder, there’s no update on his fitness yet and a question mark remains over his participation in the next game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 10 as well. As for Surya, he wasn’t among the first batch of players to travel for the away fixture due to personal reasons.

Under Surya, MI returned to winning ways, beating LSG by six wickets with eight balls to spare. The way they wrested the initiative during the second half of LSG’s innings, followed by a 143-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Rickelton was vintage MI. The five-time IPL champions, though, are still placed ninth on the table with six points from 10 matches. Reaching the playoffs is mathematically possible, but MI will have to win all their remaining four matches and then hope that the other results fall in their favour.

The question is whether Surya will be joining the squad before the RCB game. According to sources, the message from the player to the team is that he will travel to Raipur if things are okay. Still four days to go for the match and there’s an optimism in the camp that he might join. The team, RevSportz understands, is also expecting Hardik to come before Sunday’s game. 

By any chance if Surya doesn’t turn up and Hardik remains unavailable, then who will lead MI against RCB? It is learnt that the stand-in captaincy options include Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah, with the former might be having his nose in front. But there’s enough time, and the possibility of Surya joining the squad isn’t ruled out.
