Accept, Introspect, Implement – India need the Abhinav Bindra Formula for Australia

India will need to accept that they haven’t been at their best. They need to accept that their catching and fielding have been dismal. To say such things happen and that it is just a one-off will not really help, because it isn’t a one-off. It is not that India have dropped catches in just one game. They have put down a total of 11 catches, and that’s the reality. Some of these chances were fairly straightforward and could ultimately push India out of the World Cup. The reality is that poor fielding could cost India a place in the semi-finals.

We at RevSportz – Trisha, Snehasish and I – have attended all of India’s training sessions here in the UK. And may I say, there has been intensity. Fielding drills are a regular feature of these sessions, and catching practice is constant. Radha Yadav is certainly one of the better fielders and has taken some blinders in training. Yet, when it comes to match situations, she has now missed three chances. Yastika Bhatia, Nandni Sharma and Arundhati Reddy have all dropped catches, and that’s what has made things difficult for India.

While Radha dismissed the dropped catches as an aberration, the truth is they have now become a feature of every Indian fielding effort in key games. And that’s what worries me ahead of the game against Australia. It’s not just the dropped catches. Misfields and no-balls are issues as well. Australia, so far, haven’t given their opponents a chance, and if India are to beat them and progress, they will need to play a flawless game, something they haven’t managed so far.

Abhinav Bindra, one of India’s greatest athletes, says it well. He believes the first thing an athlete should do is accept. If there are issues with the fielding, accept them. Don’t become defiant, because that won’t help. Only when you accept can you introspect. That’s the second stage, according to Abhinav. And finally, when you introspect, you will surely find a solution. For India too, this is the formula ahead of Lord’s.

Accept that you haven’t been good enough in this tournament. Accept that you can do much better and indeed beat Australia. Once you acknowledge the need for improvement, you will automatically introspect and identify the areas where you can get better. Against Australia, India will need to punch above their weight. They must ensure there are no dropped catches, no-balls or misfields.

There is little doubt that Australia start as favourites on current form. They have played the best cricket and look like a well-oiled machine. To stop them, two things need to happen simultaneously. First, India must play a brand of cricket they haven’t produced so far. Second, Australia must have a relatively modest day. Such things have happened in sport and can surely happen again. But it’s hard – really hard – is all I’d say. If India do beat Australia at Lord’s, I’d consider it an upset of sorts. Upsets do happen in sport, and I’ll be hoping for one on Sunday.
