IND vs AUS: India face defining semi-final test at Lord’s

India will go into the Australia game knowing exactly what they need to do to make the semi-finals. South Africa play on Sunday morning (local time), which means India will have the qualification equation in front of them before taking the field. While they will hope Bangladesh can push South Africa all the way, India will not only need to beat Australia but also do so in a manner that ensures qualification for the semi-finals.
It will not be easy. India beat Australia in the semi-finals of the 2025 ODI World Cup at home before going on to become world champions. In that sense, this could be a grudge match at Lord’s. Australia will be keen to avenge that defeat and will know that India have not played their best cricket so far. In contrast, the Australians have been outstanding, dominating the tournament with commanding wins over every opponent and boasting a superb net run rate of 4.7.
The question everyone is asking is whether India can rise to the challenge. Are Australia beatable, and can India raise their game when it matters most?
In sport, every result is possible. If that were not the case, the top seeds would win every tournament and there would never be an upset. In that sense, Australia are certainly beatable. In a T20 contest, all it takes is one batter or one bowler to produce a match-winning performance. Marizanne Kapp did exactly that for South Africa against India, anchoring the innings and staying until the end to seal victory. So far, India have not produced a similar individual performance, and that is where their senior players will need to step up.
Can Smriti Mandhana produce a match-winning innings at Lord’s in front of a capacity crowd? Can Shafali Verma rein herself in and convert her starts into a decisive contribution? Can Jemimah Rodrigues build on the time she spent at the crease against Bangladesh and finally make a telling impact? Will Yastika Bhatia get another opportunity, or will India turn to Bharti Fulmali? Most importantly, will Harmanpreet Kaur abandon the conservative approach and lead from the front with the bat? And can Richa Ghosh provide the late flourish that India so desperately need?
With the ball, Shree Charani will require greater support. She has been something of a lone ranger so far, and Renuka Singh, Deepti Sharma, Nandni Sharma and Radha Yadav will all need to back her up. India will need wickets to contain Australia’s formidable batting line-up, which means the fielding must also improve significantly.
The final training session, scheduled for today, should provide an indication of how India are shaping up. This will also be a battle of nerves. How well India manage to stay relaxed and embrace the pressure could determine the outcome. Defeat would mean packing their bags and heading home, and that alone is pressure enough. Handling it successfully and producing their A-game could become another defining moment for a team that has already experienced unprecedented highs over the past few months.
