India vs Australia: Three X-Factors Who Must Deliver in India’s T20 World Cup Decider at Lord’s

India face Australia in their final group-stage fixture knowing there is no room for error. It is a do-or-die contest. If South Africa defeat Bangladesh and India lose to Australia, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will be knocked out of the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Pressure often brings out the very best in elite athletes, and India will need exactly that on Sunday. Every player will have a role to play, but there are three X-factor players who could prove decisive in taking India across the finish line.

Shafali Verma

Shafali Verma

Shafali Verma heads into the contest on the back of an impressive half-century against Bangladesh. However, her role extends well beyond her batting. Following her successful spell during the 2025 ODI World Cup, she has increasingly been entrusted with bowling responsibilities, including inside the powerplay.

With Beth Mooney’s well-documented discomfort against spin early in her innings, India could once again turn to Shafali with the ball. Her bigger responsibility, though, remains at the top of the order. She has looked fluent whenever she has got herself in but has often failed to convert promising starts into substantial scores. This is the game where she must attack with intent while also showing the discipline not to overdo it.

Shafali already has two half-centuries in four matches at this World Cup. Among players who have scored more than 100 runs in the tournament, she boasts the third-highest strike rate at 157.61.

Kranti Gaud

Kranti Gaud has largely remained on the sidelines since the Netherlands game and has not featured in India’s last two matches. However, the famous Lord’s slope traditionally offers assistance to seam bowlers, making this a venue where India’s horses-for-courses approach could once again come into play.

Kranti is the quickest bowler in India’s attack, and throughout the training sessions India’s bowling coach Avishkar Salvi spent considerable time working with her, explaining how best to utilise the unique slope at Lord’s. If she is recalled and bowls at her natural pace, while making effective use of the short ball, Kranti has the potential to become India’s surprise X-factor.

N Sree Charani

Sree Charani

Not just for this game, Sree Charani has been India’s X-factor ever since the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. Fast-tracked into the national side following a promising WPL season, Charani has continued to grow with every international appearance.

One of the biggest reasons behind her success is her simplicity. She sticks to her greatest strength – turning the ball – and then makes subtle variations in line, length and pace. It is an uncomplicated approach, but one that has consistently troubled batters.

Charani has been outstanding throughout the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup. She leads the tournament’s wicket-taking charts with 12 wickets from four matches. Eleven of those wickets have been right-hand batters. Australia are likely to bring back Phoebe Litchfield, meaning Charani will face a greater challenge against left-hand batters. Yet her consistency has been remarkable. Alongside leading the wicket charts, she also sits third on the list for the tournament’s best economy rates.

She will require support from the other end, but if Charani continues her outstanding form, she has the ability to dismantle Australia’s batting line-up.

Lord’s presents enough challenges on its own. Add the pressure of possible World Cup elimination and an Australian side seeking redemption, and the stage is set for one of the biggest contests of the tournament. India will need contributions from everyone, but above all, they will need their X-factors to deliver when the stakes are at their highest.

A tense encounter awaits at the Home of Cricket. Can India rise to the occasion and keep their World Cup dream alive?
