IPL Trade Buzz Builds, But Key Decisions like Pandya’s Future Yet to Be Finalised
MI Captain Hardik Pandya (PC: Mumbai Indians)
There is a lot of talk around IPL trades. In fact, when it comes to Hardik Pandya, we have already heard plenty – that discussions are ongoing, that multiple conversations have taken place, and so on. As far as I know, the Mumbai Indians will only get to their team reviews next week, and only then can there be clarity. Post the AGM, the ownership, led by Akash Ambani, is set to take stock, after which they will follow due process and take decisions. While some tough calls can indeed be expected, nothing concrete has happened so far to suggest that decisions have been finalised.
As far as Rishabh Pant is concerned, the move was expected. Things were not really working out, and a change of team seemed the best option. That it is the Delhi Capitals is interesting, but logical, especially with control set to return to JSW Group next year. Parth Jindal, Sourav Ganguly and Pant have always shared a close equation, making this a natural move. Had GMR Group still been in control, the decision may well have been different.

As for Kuldeep Yadav moving to the Lucknow Super Giants, it appears to be a very good option. Spin has been an issue for LSG, and with Kuldeep, they could build a strong all-Indian bowling attack.
It will also be interesting to see what the Kolkata Knight Riders do, as some key decisions are expected there as well. Whether Rinku Singh is made captain remains to be seen. There is also speculation around Yashasvi Jaiswal as a potential trade option. Will he stay with the Rajasthan Royals or move on, especially with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerging as their go-to choice? That is another question to watch.
Another point of interest in the coming months is the start date of the IPL. Arun Dhumal, in an interview with me in mid-May, suggested that the tournament could be brought forward to mid-March. It is a prudent and logical move, given the extreme heat across India in the latter half of May. A mid-March start and mid-May finish seems both practical and sensible.
Thereafter, Devajit Saikia, in an interview with PTI, hinted at a similar window, with 10 March doing the rounds as a possible start date.
On 3 March, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to conclude in India, after which attention will shift to Australia for the 150th anniversary Test between England and Australia from 11–15 March. This will be a landmark occasion, with tickets already sold out. Having bought some myself, I am eagerly awaiting the match.
Given that Australian and English players are major attractions in the IPL, the tournament may instead begin around 16–17 March 2027, rather than a week earlier. Starting the IPL while a marquee Test match between Australia and England is underway would seem odd.
The current IPL season may be over, but news around the billion-dollar league will continue to keep fans engaged in the months ahead. From start dates to major trade developments, all of it adds to the league’s appeal and ensures it remains relevant throughout the year.
