Manchester Misery: Dropped Chances Haunt India as Radha Yadav Faces Tough Night

The defeat in Manchester continues to hurt. As I write this piece late into the evening, I am still feeling the pangs of disappointment. On multiple occasions in the game, India looked like taking control, only to see things slip away. One of the main reasons was indeed the fielding lapses, or more specifically, the dropped catches. Two of the three chances were put down by Radha Yadav, arguably the best fielder in the Indian team. Not just in India, Radha ranks among the finest fielders in the world. And yet, it happened. The ball did not stick, and the second chance was as straightforward as it could get.

Let me say this at the outset. I do not know Radha well, so please do not jump to conclusions and call this PR. It isn’t. I have watched the Indian team train every single day over the past ten days, and the best fielder on display has been Radha. Here in Manchester, on match day minus two, the team was engaged in high-catching drills – two high catches followed by a flat one. Almost all the fielders dropped a couple, except Radha. For as long as I watched, she did not put down a single chance. The coaching staff even applauded her on occasions, as she pulled off some outstanding takes during the drill.

And still, it happened. In the match, she was stationed at long-on because she is the best to patrol that area. The catch off Marizanne Kapp proved to be a turning point, and Radha will find it hard to overcome the disappointment. But that is what sport is all about – it is cruel and unpredictable.

You will not always find rational explanations for how someone as good as her could drop back-to-back chances. On another day, she would have taken 99 out of 100 catches, many far more difficult than the ones she missed. But she did drop them, and India did lose. These things happen. It is not the first time in sport, and it certainly will not be the last.

So let us not keep trolling Radha, for she is the one hurting the most. To think that her team could be knocked out of the T20 World Cup because of those missed chances is a difficult burden to bear. Spare a thought for her mental health and allow her the space to recover. The scars will be deep, and it will take time for her to move on.

These are moments when a player needs support. Stand by her. One bad game does not make her a poor fielder. As Amol Muzumdar said, Radha will surely take some stunning catches and win India a game very soon. All one can hope is that day arrives on June 28 against Australia at Lord’s.

For now, Radha and the team need to take a day off – step away from the game briefly. Then return, beat Bangladesh, and prepare for Australia. In sport, it is never over until it is over, and India will know that from their experience of the 2025 home World Cup. The worst may well be behind Radha, and things can only improve from here.
