Shreyas Iyer Set for New T20 Captaincy Era as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Looms Large in India Selection

Not many selection committee meetings have generated this level of interest. First, India will see a new T20 captain. Second, in all likelihood, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, currently in Sri Lanka with the India A team, will break into the senior team for the tours of Ireland and England. What also needs to be seen is whether the selectors pick a young squad for Ireland and a different one for England, or will the same squad travel to both tours?

What happens to players like Rajat Patidar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar? Will they get a look in, and will the selectors consider IPL performances when picking T20 squads? Finally, what about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya? Will we see them miss out or be a part of the England tour, at least?

Ajit Agarkar and the team management will give us an idea about their vision for India’s white-ball cricket with this selection. While the 50-over World Cup is 15 months away, the next T20 World Cup in Australia-New Zealand and the LA 28 Olympics are in two years. This is the crop that will start to evolve as a team going forward and, in that sense, it could be a key selection meeting.

Coming to Vaibhav, he is clearly ready. The highest scorer in the IPL, he is the next big thing on the horizon. Even the great Sachin Tendulkar has talked him up and it could be a big day for the young man. To break into the Indian senior team at 15 is unheard of and it could be one of the biggest days of his life. Cricket needs entertainers and crowd-pullers, and Vaibhav could be the next big star after Kohli and Rohit call it a day.

In fact, a rather routine Ireland tour will also suddenly assume real importance if Vaibhav is included. Not only will fans want to look at India’s new skipper in Shreyas Iyer, they will also have an eye on Tilak Varma and, of course, Vaibhav. He has the ability to put bums on seats and I wouldn’t be surprised if fans travel to Ireland to catch a glimpse of him.

Coming to Rohit and Kohli, I’d want to see them play the England series at least. It is now just about what they can do, but also to see them keep doing it leading into the World Cup. While Kohli has done enough to put all debate over form and fitness to rest and is now a certainty for the 2027 World Cup, there are still lingering doubts over Rohit.

It will be interesting to see how he goes about the next month and a half. Finally, to Hardik – the only question is whether he can take the load of bowling ten overs in the 50-over format. He could be a key player in South Africa and his selection will give us an idea of what the selectors have in mind.

With a lot at stake, this is no ordinary meeting. And yes, Shreyas and Vaibhav will be the two key talking points from it.
