“South Africa Will Be Crucial Match”: Shafali Verma After India’s Big Win Over Netherlands
After starring in India’s 95-run victory over the Netherlands at Headingley, Shafali Verma struck a confident note ahead of the team’s next challenge against South Africa. The opener scored a half-century and picked up three wickets as India registered their second consecutive win of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Working Through Opening Partnership Struggles
India’s opening pair had come under scrutiny following an inconsistent run of scores in the England series. Reflecting on the work done since then, Shafali said communication and preparation were key.
“We were talking a lot and helping each other about how we could build partnerships in the middle. After the last match, I worked a lot in the nets, tried to play more along the ground and control myself mentally,” she said.
The result was a fluent century stand with Smriti Mandhana that laid the foundation for India’s imposing total of 209/5 against the Netherlands.
South Africa Clash Already On India’s Mind
While India have started the tournament strongly, Shafali acknowledged that tougher tests lie ahead.
“We all know South Africa will be a crucial match for us,” she said. “All the batters are in touch. Shree Charani bowled really well today and we know what she can do. Deepti took a five-wicket haul in the last match. I think everyone is ready.”
Asked whether India were operating at their full potential, Shafali emphasised the confidence running through the squad, with both batting and bowling units contributing significantly in the opening two games.
Smriti Mandhana: The Calming Influence
One of the more revealing moments of the press conference came when Shafali spoke about her long-standing partnership with Mandhana.
“I feel like hitting a six every ball,” she said with a smile. “But she is the one who always tells me to stay calm and play along the ground.”
Shafali credited Mandhana’s experience and game awareness for helping her navigate innings more effectively. “She has the best seat to tell me what I am doing wrong, and I have the best seat to tell her which bowler I can take on.”
Update On Shreyanka, Welcome For Nandni
Shafali also provided a brief update on Shreyanka Patil, who suffered an ankle injury during the match.
“She has gone for a scan. Our BCCI doctors are taking care of her,” she said.
The opener also praised World Cup debutant Nandni Sharma, revealing that the team made a point of celebrating the youngster’s special day.
“We can all relate to how special a first World Cup is. Everyone congratulated her and we were all cheering for her.”
