England captain Ben Stokes has defended Jofra Archer amid criticism over his absence from the first Test against New Zealand, which begins on June 4. Archer, who played the entire IPL 2026, was unavailable for selection for the opening match of the series, which will be played at Lord’s.

Stokes said Archer’s absence should not be viewed as a lack of commitment to England.

“Jof, I think, has shown that he is committed and loves playing for England. Just because he’s not available for this first Test match does not change that,” he said on the eve of the match in London.

Stokes further explained that modern-day cricketers have more opportunities than players did in the past because of the growth of franchise cricket.

“A lot of the points that people would be making around Jof and that situation, I think, are to do with the landscape back when they were playing,” Stokes said. “It’s completely different now. There are opportunities for cricketers now that weren’t there 10, 15 or 20 years ago. Yes, in an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone you want available for every single opportunity. But that’s not the reality of cricket at the moment. There’s so much more out there for players.”

Stokes also said England must be careful when handling situations involving injury-prone players.

“There is a situation where it could get messy, and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it a different way, and that’s not good for anyone,” Stokes said.
