Win or lose, the Women’s T20 World Cup needs to be covered with the same intensity

India don’t go into the T20 World Cup as favourites, and this is known to anyone who follows the sport closely. Unlike in the 50-over format, which India has mastered, the T20 format is still not India’s strength when it comes to the women’s game. It is exactly the opposite for the men. India’s prowess in men’s T20 cricket is now widely acknowledged. Not so in the 50-over game, where Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill need to create a template and prove a point.
Coming to the Women’s T20 World Cup, the truth is that India will have to beat one of either South Africa or Australia to make the semi-finals. And it is a very difficult task. India recently lost a series against South Africa 1–4 and Australia will always be the team to beat in the women’s game. This is where we need to back the team.
There is momentum in the sport post the World Cup win back home and, from that standpoint, the T20 World Cup is of enormous importance. If the team isn’t able to go the distance, there could be a loss of momentum. All of a sudden, the World Cup win back home will be designated a one-off and the momentum could be lost. That’s what we need to guard against.
We at RevSportz believe that the Women’s T20 World Cup needs to be covered with the same verve that we showed for the men’s event a few months ago. It can’t be tokenism. That’s what we need to guard against. With the FIFA World Cup on and the Indian men’s team coming to Ireland and England shortly, the tendency will always be to push the women’s tournament down the pecking order. Allocate limited resources to it.

We can indeed be constructively critical. That’s part of the job. If there is something we think needs to be said, we will indeed say it. If we need to point to a deficiency, that’s part of the drill and we will always do it. But that doesn’t mean there will be limited coverage. Win or lose, the coverage has to be done with the same intensity. That’s when the sport will evolve into a tangible brand.
Our belief is that with the WPL, India will be the dominant team in the next decade. While it might take a little time, it will certainly happen like it has with the men’s team thanks to the IPL. During this time, it is essential that the sport is backed, and to the fullest.
With the war, it hasn’t been an easy time. Travel has been challenging and costs are high. And yet we have tried our best to ensure we allocate optimum resources for the Women’s T20 World Cup. This was a mission, for we believe this is where we can make a tangible difference to the sport. There could be limited reader attraction compared to the men’s game, but that shouldn’t matter. It can’t always be about numbers.
As journalists, we need to make a difference and this is our time. Like the team on the field, it is as important we play well and help sustain the momentum going ahead.
