The countdown to the Women’s T20 World Cup is firmly underway and, unlike many previous global tournaments, almost every participating team arrives in England having already spent significant time preparing in similar conditions.

Over the last few weeks, teams have deliberately scheduled bilateral series, tri-series and training camps to ensure they are as acclimatised as possible before the tournament begins. The result is a field that appears far more prepared than usual, adding another layer of intrigue to a World Cup that is already expected to be fiercely contested.

England have perhaps been the biggest beneficiaries of the build-up. Charlotte Edwards’ side won both of their major preparatory assignments, defeating New Zealand 2-1 before repeating the scoreline against India. More importantly, they discovered contributions from multiple players across departments.

Alice Capsey was among the standout performers with the bat across both series amd in two different batting positions as an opener as well as no 4, while Heather Knight and Freya Kemp also produced important innings against India and New Zealand. With the ball, Charlie Dean and Lauren Bell continued their impressive form, while Linsey Smith played a crucial role against New Zealand. Of their four victories across the two series, three came while chasing.

For New Zealand, the series against England offered a mixed picture. Sophie Devine and Maddy Green produced encouraging performances, but Amelia Kerr was unable to replicate the outstanding form she had shown earlier against Zimbabwe and South Africa. Consistency has often been New Zealand’s challenge and, as defending champions, they will be eager to address that issue quickly once the tournament begins.

India also found positives despite the series defeat. Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma all contributed with the bat, while Sree Charani and Nandni Sharma impressed during the early stages of the series with the ball. Kranti Goud’s return to the wickets column was another welcome development as India look to finalise combinations before their warm-up fixtures in Cardiff.

Elsewhere, Scotland used a home tri-series to build momentum, winning three of their four matches. Kathryn Bryce once again underlined her importance with 161 runs and five wickets, while Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana continued her remarkable consistency with 190 runs in four innings. Heather Siegers was a bright spot for the Netherlands, scoring 120 runs during the competition.

The tri-series in Ireland offered valuable preparation for Ireland, West Indies and Pakistan. While Pakistan failed to register a victory, scores above 170 in two of their three completed innings provided some encouragement. Ireland were led by the ever-reliable Orla Prendergast, who scored 129 runs, while Hayley Matthews once again carried the batting responsibility for West Indies with 123 runs in three innings.

The bowling performances were equally noteworthy. Ava Canning claimed six wickets for Ireland, while Qiana Joseph and Chinelle Henry played key roles in West Indies’ successful campaign.

Even teams that did not participate in official series have ensured thorough preparation. Australia and South Africa arrived early in England and have already been involved in training camps and unofficial matches. South Africa received an immediate boost with Shabnim Ismail claiming five wickets in the first unofficial fixture, a reminder of the threat she continues to pose.

All of it points towards one conclusion: no team will enter this World Cup underprepared. Whether through bilateral contests, tri-series tournaments or extended training camps, every side has invested heavily in understanding English conditions.

With warm-up matches beginning on June 6 and the tournament proper just days away, the stage is set for a highly competitive World Cup where preparation could prove just as important as talent.
