Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Shemaine Campbelle’s maiden T20I fifty powers West Indies to stunning win over New Zealand

New Zealand’s title defence in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup suffered an early setback as West Indies stunned them by seven wickets in Southampton. Chasing 163, Shemaine Campbelle produced a magnificent unbeaten 90 off 62 balls as the Windies crossed the line with one ball to spare. Unsurprisingly, she was named Player of the Match.
The Windies lost Qiana Joseph cheaply in the chase, but a valuable 74-run partnership between Campbelle and skipper Hayley Matthews laid the foundation. Matthews looked in good touch before being dismissed for 48 off 37 balls. At that stage, Campbelle was on 31 from 30 deliveries. However, she shifted gears brilliantly and scored 59 runs from her next 32 balls, showcasing her power-hitting ability.
The most eventful passage came in the 14th over when White Ferns skipper Amelia Kerr came on to bowl. Campbelle launched the first ball of the over for six and then, two deliveries later, Kerr was unable to hold on to a sharp return catch. Campbelle capped off the over with another six and brought up her maiden T20I half-century.
Interestingly, it was her first T20I fifty in 123 innings for her country. What a day to achieve the milestone, and against the defending champions. Although she received little support later, with Deandra Dottin also departing cheaply, Campbelle ensured she finished the job almost single-handedly and left New Zealand stunned.
For the White Ferns, Jess Kerr was the only bowler to pick up more than one wicket, finishing with two.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, useful contributions from Issy Gaze (39 off 29), Sophie Devine (22 off 15), Brooke Halliday (40 off 32) and Maddy Green (35 not out off 22) helped New Zealand post a total in excess of 160. After a 49-run opening stand, they lost momentum and suddenly slipped to 56/3.
Aaliyah Alleyne dismissed both Amelia Kerr and Gaze in the same over before adding two more wickets to her tally to finish with an economical four-wicket haul. Dottin and Matthews chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Overall, it was a difficult outing for Amelia Kerr, with New Zealand suffering a shock defeat in their World Cup opener while she failed to make a significant impact with either bat or ball.
The White Ferns will next face Sri Lanka at the same venue on 16 June, while West Indies will look to carry this momentum forward when they take on Scotland in Leeds on 18 June.
