Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium will host the historic one-off Big Bash League (BBL) match between the defending champions, the Perth Scorchers, and the Melbourne Renegades on December 12, 2026.

The match will serve as the opening fixture of the 16th season of the BBL. It will also mark a historic occasion, as it will be the first time a BBL match has been staged outside Australia.

This is the only BBL fixture to be played on Indian soil was jointly unveiled by PM Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (MCG) during a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. The decision was taken to strengthen sporting ties between the two nations.

“Stepping into the MCG evokes two simultaneous emotions for any Indian,” Modi said while speaking at the MCG. “First, the thrill of an India-Australia match and second, the realisation that, in both our nations, cricket is not merely a sport but a shared passion. Yet, today, there is no pressure of a ‘last-over finish.’ Instead, there is only the joy of the game, the warmth of our friendship, and the energy of future champions.”

CA Goes Global with BBL

“I think the opportunity for any of our clubs and players to be in India and play a BBL game creates enormous value for their club, whether that’s now or in the future,” Cricket Australia (CA) General Manager of the BBL Alistair Dobson said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

Representatives from CA and the BBL travelled to Chennai in May to inspect the venue and assess the city’s readiness to host the match. During their visit, they also held discussions with BCCI President Mithun Manhas and acting CEO Hemang Amin on the sidelines of an IPL match.

“We know there are incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai,” Dobson said. “Everyone we’ve spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd. What has become clear to us as we’ve developed this event is just how popular the BBL already is in India. Sometimes we perhaps don’t realise that, or we forget it.”

TJ Srinivasaraj, President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), said, as quoted by Cricinfo: “The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association is privileged to partner with Cricket Australia on this landmark occasion of staging the first-ever Big Bash League match in India. This historic event reflects the spirit of collaboration between our organisations and underscores our shared commitment to delivering cricket to the highest international standards.”

By staging a BBL match in India, CA aims to expand the reach of its domestic league across South Asia. The board also hopes to explore the possibility of hosting IPL matches in Australia in the future.
