ENG vs IND: Vaughan, Cook Question Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Absense from India Playing XI

Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook have questioned India’s decision to bench teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the Ireland T20I series. Both of them are eager to watch the 15-year-old make his international debut against England.

In a conversation on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Vaughan questioned Indian selectors on leaving Sooryavanshi out from the playing XI. “We must say to the BCCI and the selector, Ajit, how has he not played against Ireland? Our mate, the kid,” said Vaughan.

Cook then added, “I’m there tomorrow, and I’m driving up as a fan to make sure that the 15-year-old kid plays.”

Sooryavanshi earned his maiden India call-up after a dream IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals. The left-handed batter finished the tournament as the orange cap winner after scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30 and he was named Player of the Tournament. However, he did not get his debut cap in the two-match T20I series against Ireland, where India suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat. He was also not a part of the playing XI in the first T20I against England in Durham.

Former India cricketer Saba Karim also backed the youngster to succeed at the highest level. “l have full faith in his ability to score big runs,” Karim said on JioStar. “Not only Indian fans but the entire world is waiting to see Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play in the same manner that he did in the IPL. I have high hopes for this young lad. Very soon, we will see him in all three formats. I am dead sure about it.”

India and England will now meet in Manchester on Saturday for their second T20I match.
