India’s Middle and Lower Order Crisis Deepens in T20Is.

The Indian men have registered 4 losses in their five last T20Is, including a very disappointing scorecard that read 76 all out against England on Tuesday. Losing to Ireland in a series for the very first time, along with registering India’s biggest T20I defeat by a margin of 125 runs against England, has raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy stint started on an unimpressive note.
Perhaps one of the biggest points of concern has been the middle and lower order of this T20I team. Over the last five games, the inability of the middle order to step up with the bat and carry the momentum forward has been the recurring theme.
If we reflect upon the scorecards of the Ireland series- in the first match, Abhishek Sharma gave the perfect start by smashing 49 runs at a strike rate of 245 but the scorecard wasn’t kept ticking due to lack of support from the other end. Thereafter, the entire batting unit fell like a pack of cards. Shivam Dube and Axar Patel did stitch together a 35-run partnership but the latter’s individual score of 15 runs off 16 balls was not acceptable as per modern T20 standards. India managed only 148 in 20 overs where they had a total of 182 to chase.
In the next match, India restricted the Irish team to 154 runs but despite that they struggled since the openers failed to get going. Tilak Varma was the top scorer with 55 runs to his name but his strike rate of only 119 and his inability to accelerate later on and play spin had people raising questions. After his dismissal, the highest partnership was between Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana of 26 runs but by then India were behind in the game. Rana tried his best and hit a few big shots before ultimately getting dismissed for 21 in 10 balls and India ended up losing the match by 1 run, facing a 2-0 series defeat.
The next match versus England was a washout, making this the only game that India did not lose in the series so far. However, they did get the chance to bat before the match got called off. This time, the batters showed some promise. Abhishek smashed a quickfire 59 in 24 balls, Shreyas played a composed knock of 68 runs off 47 balls and Dube once again scored 42 runs. Despite so many top scorers, India managed only 189, where the predicted score read something above 210 at a certain point.
In the 2nd T20I, Abhishek gave a great start, smashing 43 runs, stitching together a crucial 50-run stand with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The next significant partnership of 65 runs was between Shreyas and Ishan. But, thereafter, the entire middle and lower order crumbled. Some intent was shown by Tilak Varma where he scored 24 runs of 11 balls but the acceleration came in a little too late, with India managing 190, which once again could have gone past 200.
In their last humiliating defeat against England where they got bundled out for only 76 runs, the highest partnership in the match was once again by the openers (23 runs), thereafter it was just a major collapse.
This repeated performance has got people raising questions. Some are talking about the abundance of left-handed batters in the middle order which has made the lineup predictable. Former Indian all-rounder, Irfan Pathan wrote on X, “Looking at the number of left-hand batters in the Indian T20 team right now, it’s even more of a reason for Team India to look at Rajat Patidar going forward.”
Some are debating over Tilak Varma’s role and contribution in the current team. Ishan, Axar unable to perform and Dube being sent in late, as was the case in the previous match where Harshit Rana walked in ahead of him. In a nutshell, multiple problems have started to resurface.
The void of Hardik Pandya is also perhaps being felt to a large extent. The star allrounder who got ruled out due to injury has won multiple games for India and has smashed 2288 runs in 109 innings with a strike rate of 145.91 in T20Is, while coming down the order. The absence of Pandya is further exposing the middle-order fragility, making it increasingly difficult to step into his shoes.
