Sooryavanshi’s Delayed Nets Raise Eyebrows at India Practice in Manchester

A drawing board was set up on which an action plan had been drawn during India’s solitary practice session in Manchester ahead of the second T20I. It was an unusual sight, one that had not been seen at any point during the UK tour so far. Another atypical sight centred around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
In what has now become customary, the first hour of India’s batting session did not feature Sooryavanshi. The same player had been among the first to hit the nets in Belfast and Durham. This time, however, he did not start. For around 40 minutes, Sooryavanshi did not bat. In fact, he was seen with a ball in hand. At youth level, he has picked up wickets with his left-arm spin. He bowled to Abhishek Sharma in the nets in Belfast but was not given a chance to bowl during this session. The 15-year-old was among the last to bat in the nets. At the start of the session, Sooryavanshi warmed up with run-up drills and stretching exercises. He also changed his gear midway through the session.
Shreyas Iyer once again had a long batting session and focused largely on taking on the spinners, much like he did in Durham. The India captain was also spotted doing shadow batting on the match pitch while simultaneously having a conversation with fielding coach T Dilip.
Under-fire Sanju Samson also sweated it out in the nets. The wicketkeeper-batter split his batting session into two halves — one against the pacers (both Indian and local) and the other against the spinners. Prasidh Krishna bowled extensively to Samson. Along with him, Prince Yadav, Harshit Rana and Shivam Dube also bowled to Samson, Iyer and the other batters.
Abhishek Sharma rolled his arm over alongside Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Varun Chakaravarthy. Plenty of spin was thrown at Ishan Kishan, who started against the slower bowlers, with the coaches keeping a close eye on him.
Suryansh Shedge was among the first four or five batters to practise. The seam-bowling all-rounder did not bowl much, but he batted for a long period. With a overcast forecast and a chance of rain, India could recall him at the expense of a spinner for the second T20I.
One of the notable aspects of the practice session was selector Pragyan Ojha having discussions with Gautam Gambhir and spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule. The head coach also kept a close watch on Kishan’s batting against spin.
