Bangladesh ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz calls the decision to skip the T20 World Cup 2026 in India as “politically motivated”. Miraz added that every player dreams of playing in a World Cup and they lost an opportunity. According to Mehidy, the upcoming white-ball series against India will be an exciting contest. In this exclusive interaction with Revsportz, Miraz, who is representing Galle Giants in the Lanka Premier League spoke about the disappointment of the Bangladesh players of not playing in T20 World Cup, upcoming white-ball series against India, his role as a captain, playing in the LPL and more. 

India are expected to tour Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series. How are you looking forward to that series?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: We are very excited about the series. If India comes, it will be a great occasion for our country because it’s been a long time since we played against them. India is a very strong side, and we know the challenge ahead. We will focus on playing well in our home conditions, and we’re really looking forward to the contest.

Do you think the Bangladesh Cricket Board should have sent the team to India to play in the T20 World Cup?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: I think that was a political issue. I don’t have much to say beyond that.

But Bangladeshi cricketers were deprived of playing in a World Cup. Are you disappointed that you couldn’t take part?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Every player dreams of playing in a World Cup. Many of our younger players also wanted that opportunity. Unfortunately, it happened because of political issues, and everyone knows the situation.

Would you have wanted to travel to India, considering you’ve played there before?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Yes, everybody wants to play in India.

What are your memories of that unforgettable win against India, where you and Mahmudullah were involved in a match winning partnership back in 2022?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: That was a very special moment for me. After we were six wickets down, Mahmudullah Riyad and I built a very important partnership. At that stage, I wasn’t thinking too much. My only focus was to stay positive, play according to the situation, and take it one ball at a time. We kept believing, and it turned out to be a memorable match. I’ll never forget that moment.

How do you see Tamim Iqbal taking over as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Tamim has served Bangladesh cricket for many years. I think it’s a great opportunity for him to lead the board. I hope he can help build a stronger team, improve the cricketing structure in our country, and take Bangladesh cricket forward. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does.

How has been the experience of playing in the Lanka Premier League?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Yes, this is my first time here, and it’s been a great experience. I’ve visited Sri Lanka many times to play international cricket, but I’ve never played in the LPL before. This is my first season, and I’m enjoying it a lot.

Dasun Shanaka could have won the match for Galle Gallants against Kandy Royals, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. How has been the experience playing under Shanaka?

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: Definitely. Dasun is a great player, especially in T20 cricket, and he’s doing a very good job as captain. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win today, but he’s leading the team really well.

Under your captaincy, Bangladesh have enjoyed a good run, including the recent home series win against Australia.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz: It’s a very important responsibility for me and for the team. We’ve played some excellent cricket over the last couple of series, and the players have performed really well. We’ve handled pressure situations nicely. The upcoming World Cup is a huge opportunity because every player dreams of playing in a World Cup. We need to keep improving every day and adapt better to different conditions.
