Vaibhav cracks first international fifty; India take 1-0 lead

The opening T20I between Zimbabwe and India in Harare will be remembered for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi leaving his first footprints in international cricket as he blazed his way to a 19-ball 50. Eventually, on the back of a fine all-round show, India defeated Zimbabwe by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

In a chase of 126, Vaibhav looked to take the attack to the opposition from the first over. However, it was in the second over that Vaibhav took his game to another level, thwacking Richard Ngarava for two sixes and a boundary. The key feature of his batting was the 15-year-old executing the pull shot in the second over. In England, Vaibhav was mostly looking to clear the front leg and slog it across the line.

Vaibhav also cracked on-the-up shots against short-of-a-length bowling. After crunching his first international fifty, he fell to Richard Ngarava. By then, he had put India in a commanding position.

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer solidify the innings

Shreyas and Kishan then stitched together a stand of 46 to take India closer to the finishing line. The highlight of their alliance was perhaps the pulled six by Ishan Kishan off Newman Nyamhuri.

What about Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma?

Ashok Sharma, the tearaway, made his India debut, while Mayank was making a comeback to the Indian side after a lengthy lay-off due to injuries. Mayank, in particular, impressed with his pace, seam movement and bounce, and he was rewarded with two wickets.

Finally, a win for India in T20Is

The beleaguered Indian T20 side remained winless during their tour of the United Kingdom. In that respect, there would be relief in the Indian camp that they have started the Zimbabwe tour on a good note. This was also Shreyas Iyer’s first victory as captain of the senior Indian team.
