India Women’s Players’ Hundred Round-Up: Mandhana, Jemimah Stay on Track as Richa-Deepti Concerns Grow
In the last four days (July 30 to August 2), six matches took place in the ongoing Women’s Hundred, with all four Indians in action. Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh, representing Manchester Super Giants, played two matches each (vs Trent Rockets on July 31 and vs MI London on August 2). Jemimah Rodrigues also featured in two games (vs Birmingham Phoenix on July 30 and vs London Spirit on August 1), while Deepti Sharma’s Sunrisers Leeds were scheduled to play only one match (vs Trent Rockets on August 2).
Speaking of the performances, concerns over Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma’s form are growing, while Mandhana and Rodrigues continued to make crucial contributions for their respective teams.
Smriti Mandhana
The Indian opener headed into the Trent Rockets clash after her superb unbeaten 88 in the previous game. Naturally, all eyes were on whether she could carry that momentum forward and deliver another significant score. However, Mandhana managed only four runs.
In the next game against MI London, the Super Giants’ bowlers set up the win by bundling out the home side for just 92. Chasing 93, Mandhana scored 34 off 27 balls and shared a 73-run opening stand with captain Meg Lanning.
While those were valuable runs, one aspect that could be a concern is that she was dismissed by left-arm orthodox spinners in both matches — Samantha Bates for Trent Rockets and Kirstie Gordon for MI London.
Richa Ghosh
Richa’s struggles with the bat continued in this edition of the tournament. Behind the stumps, she has been impressive with her positioning, catches, stumpings and run-outs. However, she has failed to make an impact with the bat.
Against Trent Rockets, she managed only 13 before getting out while attempting a big shot. In the next match against MI London, the team showed faith in her by promoting her to number three.
It was an opportunity she needed to grab with both hands. A quick innings could have helped her team improve their net run rate more while also giving her a much-needed confidence boost. Instead, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter managed only four runs.
Jemimah Rodrigues
Jemimah continued her consistent run with another valuable contribution, remaining unbeaten on 28 off 18 balls against Birmingham Phoenix. The knock helped Southern Brave post the 140-run mark.
However, in the following game against London Spirit, she got off to another promising start but failed to convert it, falling to her Delhi Capitals teammate Marizanne Kapp for 12.
Deepti Sharma
It was another wicketless outing for Deepti. She has now gone three consecutive matches without a wicket since picking up two in Sunrisers Leeds’ tournament opener.
Against Trent Rockets, captain Dani Gibson used Deepti for only 10 balls, but she conceded 17 runs. It appeared she was struggling to find her rhythm. She did not get an opportunity to bat either. Her recent form, especially with the ball, will be a concern heading into the upcoming matches.
