India Women’s Players’ Hundred Round-Up: Deepti’s Back-to-Back Three-Fers, and Richa’s bouncebackability

The ongoing Women’s Hundred is heading into its final week, with the playoff race heating up. However, Jemimah Rodrigues’ participation was cut short after she was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Southern Brave shared the unfortunate update before their clash against Manchester Super Giants on August 8.

But the other three Team India representatives are still pushing for a playoff spot. Over the last three days, Deepti Sharma featured twice for Sunrisers Leeds (versus Birmingham Phoenix on August 7 in Birmingham and versus Welsh Fire on August 9 in Leeds), while Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh, playing for Manchester Super Giants, took on Southern Brave in Southampton.

All three came up with impactful performances for their respective teams and played key roles in their victories. Speaking of Deepti, she has made a strong comeback, especially with the ball, after losing her rhythm midway through the tournament. The veteran all-rounder did not get an opportunity to bat, but with the ball, she has picked up six wickets in her last two games — three each against Birmingham Phoenix (3/11) and Welsh Fire (3/13).

She began the tournament with two wickets before going wicketless in three consecutive games. However, in her last three outings, she has added eight wickets to her tally. With 10 wickets overall, she is now the joint-second-highest wicket-taker of the season. It seems she has peaked at the right moment when it matters most, and is playing a crucial role in Sunrisers’ must-win clashes.

Heading into the Southern Brave clash, the Super Giants opener Smriti Mandhana had scored only 15 against Welsh Fire in her previous game. However, she did not take long to make another crucial contribution, scoring 46 off 36 balls against Brave.

More importantly, it was the 83-run partnership between Mandhana and Richa that set the tone for the Super Giants to post 139/4. The biggest positive was finally seeing Richa deliver with the bat and fulfil her potential.

It was a great move from the Super Giants management to promote her to number three, and this time she grabbed the opportunity with both hands, smashing 54 off 34 balls at a strike rate of 158.82. It was her first fifty of the season, and it came at the right moment in a must-win clash as Manchester Super Giants continued their push for a playoff spot with a 27-run win.

Now, all eyes will be on August 11 in Manchester, where all three Team India players will be in action. Manchester Super Giants (Mandhana and Richa) will take on Sunrisers Leeds (Deepti) in what could be a quarter-final clash, with the winner poised to progress to the next round.
