Jaiswal Breaks Silence On Heated Exchange With Asitha Fernando

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons since the start of the ongoing second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC).

After India opted to bat first, Jaiswal started the innings on a positive note, finding the boundaries with ease. Much like in Galle, he got off to a good start and wanted to make the most of the good batting conditions at the SSC. The left-hander hit three fours and was nearing his fifty. However, in an attempt to hit another boundary in the same over from Asitha Fernando, Jaiswal was dismissed. The extra bounce from the wicket did the trick for the bowler on that occasion, as the Indian opener got an inside edge onto the stumps.

Disappointed with himself, a dejected Jaiswal was walking back to the dressing room. However, moments later, he turned back and went straight towards Asitha while the bowler was celebrating with his teammates.

The exchange escalated when Jaiswal’s helmet came into contact with Fernando’s forehead, prompting Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva to step in and keep the two players apart.

Whatever was said between the pair appeared to anger Jaiswal, who then turned back and approached the Sri Lankan pacer in an apparent attempt to confront him.

A day later, Jaiswal opened up about the incident, urging people to know the full context before commenting on it.

“If you don’t know what he said, then please don’t make your judgment. If anyone crosses the line, we need to let them know. This is India. We will fight and reply,” Jaiswal said while responding to a video posted by Cricbuzz.

The statement came hours after batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said Jaiswal should not have gone so close to the bowler in retaliation.

“I think the bowler commented something and it happened in the heat of the moment. Obviously, Jaiswal shouldn’t have gone so close to him, but it happened in the heat of the moment,” Kotak said at the press conference.

It remains to be seen what action ICC match referee Andy Pycroft takes after reviewing the footage. If the incident is found to have involved unacceptable physical contact, the players could face sanctions under the ICC’s Code of Conduct.
