Rain arrives in Colombo with Jurel on 95

The weather in Sri Lanka mocks the accuracy claims of different weather apps. It follows its own course, giving two hoots about what technology predicts. Around 2.15 pm on Monday, the heavens opened. At the time of writing, it’s raining cats and dogs. The entire ground is covered, but it doesn’t look like a passing shower. Will we see any more play on Day 2 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the SSC?

India have reached the comfort zone at 475/8 at the time of the rain stoppage. Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 95 has formed the bedrock of this effort. Given the way he has held the back end of India’s innings together, it was only fitting that Shubman Gill was waiting for his team-mate to reach his century before declaring. It will be interesting to see the skipper’s approach after play resumes. The pitch has started to show some signs of wear and tear, but India will still need time to bowl Sri Lanka out twice on this surface.

Rishabh Pant fell first ball after lunch. A wide mid-off was in place as Keshara Nuwantha tempted him to step out of his crease. Pant decided to take the fielder on but was holed out. That’s Pant for you. He departed for 63, having, in all likelihood, taken the game away from the hosts.

Manav Suthar came in and proved to be the perfect foil for Jurel. India now have total control of this Test.
