Sudharsan Likely to Miss Colombo Practice Match, Remains Touch-And-Go For Galle Test

India’s number three, Sai Sudharsan, is expected to sit out the impending practice match against a Sri Lanka XI in Colombo on Friday, it is understood. The talented southpaw is currently stationed at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where he is rehabilitating from a toe injury sustained during the first unofficial Test between India A and Sri Lanka A.
Although Sudharsan has shown encouraging progress recently and resumed light batting drills in the nets, lingering discomfort persists. The medical team will closely monitor his intensity over the coming days. While there remains cautious optimism regarding his availability for the crucial first Test in Galle on August 15, his participation is currently a touch-and-go scenario. Should he fail to prove his match fitness, Devdutt Padikkal is likely to take the number three spot.
Sudharsan’s potential absence represents a massive blow to India’s precarious World Test Championship (WTC) campaign. The team faces a steep climb, requiring eight victories from their final nine Tests to guarantee a spot in the WTC Final. Missing Sudharsan is particularly detrimental given his scintillating recent form. He dominated Sri Lanka A with three centuries in four innings – only missing a fourth because he retired hurt with this very injury – and recently impressed with a solid 81 in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur.
Adding to the management’s headaches, the BCCI CoE is facing heightened scrutiny regarding player rehabilitation. Sudharsan’s injury is the latest in a troubling series of setbacks, following recurring fitness issues for Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah’s unavailability for the Sri Lanka series, and Hardik Pandya missing the recent England ODIs.
Undeterred by the setbacks, the Indian squad arrived in Colombo on Tuesday and immediately commenced on-field preparations on Wednesday at the Nondescripts Cricket Club, the venue for their upcoming warm-up fixture.
